We took the train to inverness, cycled to ullapool, ledmore. kylesku, laxford bridge, durness, tongue , altnhara moor ( in the snow .. snow gates closed!!) and back to inverness via the black isle .... 5 days , camping by the roadsides and the train home ...."Let the train take the strain!! ".
It took so long as we kept finding pubs open late afternoon which slowed us down a bit !!

Not if you get the guard I did last Sept. He allowed on the 6 tourers with bike bookings but refused to allow on the local guy with an MTB who was only going a couple of stops.

For anyone travelling from London the overnight trains take bikes. Must be booked. London Euston to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Fort William. You can sit up all night, or pay the extra for a cabin.
Aberdeen is probably the least popular destination, but inland and Northeast is great cycling country with a good netwok of "B" roads. Travel on by train to Inverurie to get you out of the daft traffic in Aberdeen, or leave the overnight train at Montrose or Stonehaven. Also generally better weather than the West Coast.
