BB for Shimano Alivio

Just purchased an Alivio Triple chainset and need a new BB. Sheldon advices a 110 or 113, how do I know what length I need and is it possible just to purchase a new spindle for the old BB.

BB length is a can of worms! I have an Alivio chainset on my tourer and it didn't work with a 110mm BB (the front mech fouled on the frame before it had downshifted properly to the smallest cog) but works fine with 118mm BB. Why didn't I try the 113mm I hear you ask? Well I thought that I had a 113mm so I bought the longer one! This is Shimano's document on this and it calls for a 123mm for my chainset. However I've got a road front mech which are designed for narrowed rear wheels where the chain will be closer to the frame than for an MTB.

So if your Alivio chainset is an M411 (most likely) and your bike is a tourer with road front mech then 113 or 118mm will probably be best for you, if (for the same chainset) you have an MTB or a hybrid with MTB front mech then 123mm is probably what you want.

The chainset is an Alivio MF16 and I was adviced by CRC that 113mm should fit, so will try and find a 113 spindle to use with the original BB, do you think a Sora rear Mech will work and will I need a special front derailleur?

The rear will be fine. Sounds like a road bike set-up so shorter will be better (if it will work) as too long will mean that the front mech might not go far enough. Can't you get a cartridge BB to fit your bike?

Managed to find a 68mm 113mm BB on Ebay, for a good price, I just hope it fits, still not sure about front mech yet though.
