B&M dynamo powered battery charger

Post by abradleyInf »

B&M (http://www.bumm.de/index-e.html) have a dynamo powered battery charger called Ride and Charge, for the Ixon (4 AA cells), but possibly a 4AA battey pack could be used on its own.

I think its just a pointer to a bit of kit that may be of use whilst touring.

A charger that can be fitted to your dynamo and keep your ipod batteries full of life 8)

The link keeps popping up in German though so being a bit dim I have no idea what it says

It's not the sort of equipment I am interested in but if you go to the www via google, it will offer to translate the page. It can come up with some bizarre results but it is usually good enough to get the gist of what is being said.

It seems to say that it charges at 440mA, and will charge 2100mAh NiMh in about 5 hours riding, which implies to me that they are being charged as a set of 4 in series.
That's OK for charging sets in the light, and also if you are using them outside the light as a set of 4, but if you are using them in pairs (eg GPS), then you would have to try and ensure that both pairs were at a similar state of discharge before you charged them as a set of 4.
If both pairs weren't at the same state of discharge, whichever became fully charged first would be damaged by overcharging unless you manually stopped charging. When to do that would be a matter of guesswork.

I make no claims to being an expert in the field, so I'll be happy to be put right if I'm wrong.
