FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
I listen the Lords debate and changed my mind. I'm now in favour.
Turns out they're basically gunna be selling the land, with loads of rukles about what you can do with it, to people like the National Trust and councils. These groups already look after parks etc. No big deal.

My union sent a link to that last week.
Naturally, I signed it.

What manner of creature's this, being but half a fish and half a monster
Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Looks like the uproar has done a bit of good - the sell off is on pause for a while.

Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Really stupid idea IMO. Managing woodlands is a skilled and costly business and not every Tom, Dick or Harry has the wherewithall to do it.
Also I'm not prepared to put my faith in the robustness of legal contracts drawn up between Government Departments and other interests particularly private interests which purport to safeguard public access.

Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Looks like the idea is being shelved, allegedly Cameron does not like it: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20110217/tu ... 23e80.html I joined the Facebook campaign against it (a unique event for me) and also spoke to my wife's uncle who is a manager type in the FC and said it would be a disaster, plus reading the CTC concerns re cycling access.
Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
This is an important U turn, quite early in the parliamentry term. Hopefully it will cause the tory section of government to reflect carefully how their ideology really affects people on the ground, whether they are civil servants or the public.

You think this will give them some kind of consious, there more likely to be spiteful and take it out on the country some other way.

We still need to be diligent to ensure that further government proposals do not compromise cycling access.
Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Rumour is that Prince Charles was not amused and had a private word with the minister concerned.
Re: FORESTRY COMMISSION SELL OFF
Pleased to read in CycleClips that that the CTC was active in opposing the Government proposals, but, alas, behind the scenes is not the way to go. CTC members look for inspired leadership from HQ to involve us all and what we get is silence. The government love it.
Happily others were not so silent and the government had to respond and do a U turn.

I thought the 38 Degrees campaign was very impressive.
