Changing Sturmey Archer 3 spd for a 5 spd

Post by lukelukeluke »

Hello. I have an old pashley trike with a 3 spd sturmey archer gear hub. The gears are a bit knackered though and I was wondering if its possible to change it for a 5 spd or even 7 spd hub instead? I don't know a huge amount about bikes, so any help most welcome!

Thanks

Luke

Hi

I have a Raleigh Twenty which has 5 speed innards inside the original AW 3- speed shell. So if you can find an old 5-speed hub (s5, s5/1, s5/2) you can just swap the guts and save yourself the hassle of any respoking.

honestly; i doubt it.

check that there's oil or oily grease in there, the cable pulls without resistance, the triggers got a drip of oil in between it's plates and the cable's adjusted correctly

Just out of interest, where on the trike is the hub gear?
I'm trying to work it out, and failing!

colin - just infront of the rear axle. it's got a sprocket on one of the spoke flanges, if that makes sense. :D

Aha! got it!
Primary and secondary chains, with the gearbox in between....sounds familiar!
