Hello Colin, I followed a modified Allan Pewsey-YHA Arran route in May/June 2010. You may have already seen this.
My Journal (Michael's 2010 LEJOG) is available to read on the cycle-endtoend website, here's a link to a Forum post where I've added some extra comments-

I've taken modified Al Pewsey's / Michael's Route added some advice from Mick F and come up with http://www.bikemap.net/route/711431 as my route for a JOGLE starting July 2nd.
Also started to insert all the possible places we could stay @ on route depending how far we got each day.

Some people don't like the A82, but are happy to recommend the A9 north of Inverness. I'm in the opposite camp. We rode on the A9 from Tain to Kessock Bridge and it's not an experience i'd care to repeat. We did A82 all the way from Drumnadrochit to Loch Lomond, apart from a small section north of Fort William. I found the A82 fine, wasn't that busy and isn't particularly narrow. The only unpleasant bit was between Fort William and North Ballaculish, but we did most of that at 5.00 pm on a Tuesday evening (i.e. rush hour).

If doing it again, I'd give the old A9 route a try via Drumochter, Kingussie, and Aviemore. North of Inverness, i'd avoid the A9 and go via Bonar bridge, Lairg, Altnaharra and either Tongue or Bettyhill. Less direct than the A9, but the countryside is stunning and the best bit of the whole route IMO.
