Garmin 705

Hello all. Apologies if this topic has been discussed before, but I couldn't see anything on the boards.
I'm thinking of buying the above kit for my upcoming lands end-john o groats trip. My main question is, will I be able to download the bed and breakfast CTC route onto the Garmin 705? The reason I ask, is that I'm sure I have read somewhere that you cannot do this. So, any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I've never used GPS kit in all my years cycling, so if anyone has any advice on what what the best piece of kit would be for LEJOG, I would be grateful. (I know old-fashioned maps are the obvious shout, but I'm trying to get into the 21st century here!)
Thanks in advance,
Michael

The quick answer is yes, but the real one can be complex!
Now I admit that I am sad and retain stupid facts but I vaguely remembered the route being offered in the TCX format which is a Garmin training route and
http://forum.ctc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=23140#p184290here is that offer!
The quickest answer may just be to PM the OP of that thread and see if the offer still stands!
If not then you can use several types of course data on the 705, but the good news is that it will accept the common GPS Exchange data (GPX)
If you download the route as a GPX file then you can simply either drag and drop into the 705, or download via a software programme.
The only limit you may have is that you have to have sections if the data file is too large.
Now the difficult bit.....
If the route is not in GPX format then you will need to use a program like GPSBabel to convert it - easy enough
The best guide to the 705 is by
Frank Kinlan, but this seems to be down, so
here is a link to a cached version - all you will ever need including free maps

Garmin Edge 800 is the latest unit, much better on the whole than the 705.

The 705 is a great bit of kit, but has many teething and firmware problems, though I reckon Garmin have sorted them with the newest firmware v3.3. The previous releases of firmware had many many many glitches.
These 705 problems don't bode well for immediate future of the 800.
If you want advice on either of these bits of kit, join in the fun on the Garmin forums.
