Perhaps I've given my specs an extra polish

because I have seen for the first time a button to the right of the posting area (in my format) called "Topic review." I've experimented with it - I was hoping it would allow scrolling through the entire thread instead of just the current page, which is all I've ever managed but it doesn't seem to achieve that or indeed anything else.
What does it do? And since I've raised the subject, is there a straightforward way of checking the earlier pages of a thread while in the middle of posting?

Having just used topic review I think it allows you to look at the last few posts (1 page?) on the assumption that your post will follow on naturally from the last one. What they don't realise is that on this vastly superior and erudite forum, members carefully review the entire thread before posting along with a more general review of the relevant literature, a quick scanning of some learned journals, a telephone call to a well known expert and a telegram to our chap in the field to verify the up-to-date facts. In fact many posters carry out an actual practical experiment in the lab/workroom before posting to add veracity to their suppositions. Taking a photograph is a must as is undertaking a journey if necessary to acquire suitable data. No, there's nothing ya-boo about this forum and phpBB should put that in their pipes and patch it.

When I noticed the button for the first time yesterday, I naturally did a bit of an experiment of my own before starting this. The only thing I found I could do with it that might have some use, was to open the thread a gain in a new tab to do as gaz suggests; it's a bit quicker than opening a new tab then bringing up the forum and finding the thread, but I find I'm still stuck on the current page.
I do try to think before I start to post, but no matter how much I prepare I occasionally think of something else or get nagging doubts about what I've remembered. As my posts tend to be long, and my typing is generally slow (and interrupted as now by domestic contingencies) I often find it tells me somebody else has been posting in the meantime. No problem, unless they refer to something on an earlier page.
It's often my experience that if I find something like this hard to understand, a small child is able to explain that I am doing it wrong.

What board format are you using?
I can't see anything like "Topic Review" on my format: SubSilver2.

PS.
Actually, I've just found Topic Review, but the review is just displayed below the posting area. You don't have to select it, it's just 'there'. I've only just noticed that it's called Topic Review.
You can't go back very far though, just a couple of pages.
I often use it and I wasn't aware that folk didn't know it was there. I thought it was just normally there and everybody knew.

I've no idea, and as the man said in
Gone with the Wind....
I just use it how it came when I registered. I presume the format affects presentation, rather than performance. As I look at the screen now, <Topic review> is to the right of the area for typing. I assume that it would do the same, wherever it appeared on the screen.
It only appears in blue. Perhaps there's a case for a hi-viz jacket?

Re: opening the thread in a seperate tab - it's a bit quicker and easier to Right Click on the title of the thread, and then click Open Link In New Tab.
Does seem to make "Topic Review" a bit redundant though.
