Did mine yesterday. If they wanted me to wait why could I do it on line then? I got a receipt number so mine's done as far as I'm concerned.

If I've got to waste 12 WHOLE MINUTES of my time providing "them" with information "they" already have then "they'll" just have to accept that it's MY TIME being wasted so I'll do it when I can be bothered, and as I could be bothered on Monday evening then that's when it got done.

I did my girlfriends for her, shouting questions through to the kitchen.

Me "explain what your job entails, please"

Her "You know what I do!"

Me "Yeah but ... I need YOUR explanation"

They might have been better sending them out after that, although that would be getting close to 1 April.

To be fair. that's why they have Q 35 Briefly describe what you do (did) in your main job.

IMO the one that is contradictory is 34 What is (was) your full and specific job title

-> Do not state your grade or pay band.

In many cases, the job title includes the grade.

I used census data extensively during my career as an economist/town planner/demographer. It was used for example to work out housing and new school requirements and land allocations, employment land requirements, shopping provision, open space provision, commuting patterns etc.
Quite a lot of statistical information is of course already held by private businesses such as superstores, which have used their loyalty cards to build up a profile of their customers, and by Government Departments, local authorities and QUANGOS.
There are restrictions however on how much of this data can be used and whether or not it can be provided to ONS or exchanged with other agencies; concerns have been expressed about the risks of compiling one huge data base with comprehensive information from all sources listed by individuals.
The smallest areal unit for which Population Census data are made available is the Enumeration Distict so individual households cannot be identified. Once the data are tabulated the census forms are destroyed. Information about individual households can only be explored retrospectively and historically.
Good, accurate, up-to-date, relevant and robust data is essential for good decision-making and efficient use of resources.

having it to hand doesn't mean they'll make good decisions though  given that town planners are halfwits and ignore good & etc. data and go with what they think's a good idea, needed or not

There should be a question at the end of the survey "Did you tell the truth in this survey?" that should keep a University full of philosophers busy for a while.

I generally find that the questions are asked with a pre-conceived idea behind them and if you dont fit that preconception your answers are pretty meaningless.

In any other questionnaire I might agree with this, but in a census they really don't have this attitude as the analysis is done by anyone who want s to see the data. The ONS just collect info they think might be useful to whoever wants to make sense of it.

The postcode data on domestic migration will be very useful.

On the theme of completing it too early. I've just noticed that just below the postal address to "The Occupier" the first words in bold print are
A message to everyone - act now

If they can't think something like that through, it hardly inspires confidence in the rest of it.

I still think that they think in boxes that a good many of us do not fit into.
Your domestic migration isnt of much meaning to somebody who is always drifting maybee?
They still try and box us into Black or White when we have been "Grey" for generations.
These boxes on the census forms keep these definitions "alive" even when we are only ticking them because no other option fits either.
I remember my son's primary school teacher correcting his ethic origin because he didnt look "mixed" enough to her!
