Thinking of a quick trip this summer, 4 days max, hostel/hotel/bb based. Any recommended routes or must sees? Looking at 60 - 70 miles per day.

As stated above; cycle out of Dublin, south into the Wicklow mountains.

Alternatively, get a train to either Cork or Galway and head west from there.

The Irish midlands are very flat and very boring and should be avoided if you value your sanity.

Give the northern counties a try, def well set up for cycle touring, plenty of local gov info available for routes and accommodation.

Thanks for the advice. I don't mind a bit of flatness!
South to Wicklow etc sounds ideal but I'll also look into the train to Galway idea. Shame I've only got such a brief window.

This is a fun read about cycling in Ireland http://www.travellogireland.com/ireland ... ing-routes. Not so much because of this guy's insight but because of the extraordinary level of sheer anger and invective that permiates everything and everyone he writes about.

His comments on cycling in Holland are (unintentionally) hilarious. I had never realised it was such an anti-cycling country before!

Ha good call. On Amsterdam:

"It looked as if every pimp, [derogatory word removed], scoundrel, rascal, low life and general scumbag was out for the day not to mention the skinheads, Rastafarians and the drug addicts. It was not a nice atmosphere and to make matters worse there was a rubbish strike on. The place was filthy. Huge piles of litter everywhere."

"Typical scenery on the canals in Amsterdam. The house boasts are downright ugly if you ask me."

"Amsterdam with it's canals and it's unusual architecture. Some of these buildings are leaning out. The foundations of a lot of old buildings in the city are suspect and collapses are a common feature."

Well there's loads, worth a read.

Glendalough is beautiful and well worth a visit, but do go very early in the day before the crowds arrrive.
