having ridden my trike for the past 5 weeks with a broken hip i can say there is no excuse for not riding, i see a lot of people riding about in electric buggys piling on even more weight and walking less every day, they should be on very low geared strikes or quads burning some fat and improving there mobility.

Around 1960 when I was a schoolboy I'd regularly see a chap in his 70s on a cycle whilst I waited at the tram stop.
I can still picture the large cog he had on his rear cassette, he's made a lasting impression on me.

Even though I'm 65 I still don't need such a large cog on my rear cassette as he had, I can use a smaller chainring.

I have a photo of the start of a cycle tour taken last year . It shows, outside the house, two bikes with luggage, my cycling companion and an elderly looking gentleman.

What shall I do?
1 Sack the photographer.
2 Buy a new camera.
3 Make two eye holes in a paper bag and make the elderly gentleman wear it on his head?

My 79 yr old dad still cycles around town. I'm 52 and still consider myself in the prime of life and can do a 100 mile ride, at a moderate pace, at the drop of a hat even though I've never taken too much care with healthy eating or all that 28 units of alcohol a week nonsense.

If you are used to cycling I don't think you have to be that fit.

One thing I have noticed as I get older is that I don't like the cold as much which means my winter riding has tailed off a bit.
