Just been asking Mrs Mick F about 'back then' .....

She says:
"You were away a lot, it was hot, and (Daughter1) had measles. I was only 20 and it was a very long time ago."

In addition:
We had a B+W telly that was handed down from Uncle Reg, and we had a twin-tub washing machine.

Blake's Seven, The Generation Game, The Good Life ........ were those 1976?

I was 16 and living in Ireland. Even there the sun shone and the farmers were in despair for water. It was such a long time ago. Let's hope this year is a repeat of it 35 years later. It's about time we had a good summer.

I remember being on holiday in Bournemouth and not seeing one blade of green grass - as a relation kept saying, it was the summer when everyone's lawn turned to wheatabix.

All I remember is having Chicken Pox (I was 8 at the time!) and sweating calomine lotion! I also remember doing some school exams in a quarentine environment (why I don't know but I guess that my parents being teachers at the school had something to do with it!).

This happens every summer. I fear it has more to do with the light sandy soil than the scorching hot weather in recent years. It is particularly galling to those of us supplied by Wessex water as we have hose pipe restrictions whereas customers Bournemouth Water Company don't. They take their water from the river and take the view that they may as well extract the water anyway as it is only going to run into the sea a few minutes later!

It is very annoying though to see sprinklers running all day in Bournemouth, when we are watering our garden with bath water! We decked and paved our lawn over a few years ago as it died every summer.

Been watching this episode tonight. :D http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... 4_06_1976/ But the music was awful, apart from Bryan Ferry and The Real Thing. I can't remember the other songs :?

It was the year we moved back to the British Isles after living in Portugal. I was just a kid. I remember realising there was something bad going on and hosepipe bans, and talk of "The Drought" and parched lawns. But my only reference point was summers in the Algarve, so I did not really know what was normal.

The year we got engaged
Summer holiday was camping in Cornwall with an MG Midget. Fine until the home journey. There were no motorways then, we came up the Fosse Way then cut between Brum and Coventry, where the weather finally broke. The cloudburst was so bad I took a wrong turn off a roundabout somewhere near Coleshill and we found ourselves in the yard of the Meriden motorcycle works.

My Dad was in the Fire Brigade for 25 years and his first year was '76! I don't think he was ever at home, what between that and his day job.
