We moved to Gildersome (which is next to Morley) in 1975, which was also pretty warm and dry. In 1976, they prepared for standpipes by having somebody go round and paint all the little metal flaps in the street white. They were eventually installed, but never used because Dennis Howell MP (the former sovver referee) was appointed drought minister and it started pouring down.

It was the first time it had rained hard in the year we had lived in the house, and it was only then we discovered most of the windows leaked. (It turned out the frames had been sealed with cement instead of mastic :( ) Malton was the first YHA I ever stayed at (in 1958.)

Are you sure about snow at easter in 1976? The only reason I ask is that I should have said it was 1977 or 78 when there was really heavy snow at Easter, although it could have happened a couple of times close together.

I should have said the snow wasn't in Morley we were in Middlesbrough visiting family and it was only a light covering, but I could be mistaken I was only just into my teens.

1978 the winter was bad I did outward bound in february in the Lake district. One day we were trying to find the stretcher box on Helvheyln, after convincing ourselves it was somwhere near we were stood on the roof.

My constant reminder of 1976 is my gorgeous daughter.I wonder whether there has been a hotter year for the wife to have been pregnant.

Definitely snowed in Hull at Easter 76. Three weeks later in Kent, I was starting work at 5am to avoid midday temperatures in the 90's.
