bike route toaster issues

Post by diggers »

I've finally got to grips (ish) with my Garmin Edge and so want to put on my day routes for JOGLE, the idea being that this will be my main navigating tool. However, bikeroutetoaster is giving me some issues. It keeps coming up with the message 'retrieving route information' with a circle going round in a search motion...but that circle just keeps going. I've tried refreshing and deleting cookies but to no avail. Has anyone any ideas? Is this just BRT or something that I have enabled or blocked on my PC? I got as far as saving a course the other day - first one saved fine (althought it wouldn't load today) and the second one just had that circle spinning round and round.
Similarly with Garmin Connect, when I tried to upload a route from the GPS unit, the retrieving information bit just went on forever and I had to give up. I did the check page for communication plug in etc and that seemed fine.
I'm not on wireless, it is a new laptop so not clogged up with stuff, using newest update of internet explorer if that information helps.
really appreciative of some suggestions as I start JOGLE next week and I have a lot of routes to input

Are you trying to plot the whole route in one go? If so, plan one route per day instead.

Edit: oh, sounds like you're doing days. How long is each route?

BRT sometimes does that on me, on tiny routes a few km long. I close that BRT window, open another, and it's fine.

I've also been experiencing that, I think after inadvertently clicking twice on a point I want to include on the course. I've found that BRT still responds to "Save" even though it says it is retrieving information (you can check whether it has saved by going back to the Course Summary page). I then log out and close the internet explorer window completely then open a new internet explorer page, go to BRT, login, and load the course I was working on.

Hope this is of some help, if you've not already found a way around the BRT issues.

I use BRT quite a bit, but I do have one issue:

How do you make a route that goes out and back?

If I create a route away from home along our lane, out into the countryside as a circuit, then back home along the same lane I went out on, it gets totally confused. If I do the exact same thing on BikeHikeUk, all is fine.

I changed to firefox browser on recommendation and the situation has improved...not perfect, but better.
I'm not finding editing what I've already done that easy either - the impression that you can just drag and drop doesn't seem to be happening too well for me ...and that is going to be a royal pain if I can't sort it.
For some reason I decided BRT was going to be best for my purposes..but I can't remember why now!!

I haven't been having this problem, I think because I've specified that it should create the track on the left side of the road, after reading the following part of the help page (excuse me if you've already read this & are still having the problem):
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/HelpAutoRouting.aspx
"Create Track At Side of Road
Normally when using Auto Routing the track will be placed in the center of the road. This is normally fine for most uses, however it can cause problems on some GPS units when creating a course that has an out and in track on the same road. The GPS can sometimes get confused and think you're going the wrong way.
By creating a track at the side of the road this problem can be minimised because the out and in tracks are not overlapping each other."

Excellent!

Thank you Greg!

I never bothered with that function, considering it pointless, but now I see that it's anything but.

Thanks again.

Hithere. The only time I have ever had the Carmin issue you identify is when I forgot to turn off navigate when I was following a route and I tried to upload the actual data for the ride that day. I had started the imer and then chose a route to navigate. Even though I had done the 3,2,1 countdown thing at the end of the ride, when I came to upload it the little circle went on forever. Luckily it got sorted when I turned the unit on and pressed stop navigation.
