27" wheels

Post by sipit »

hi
I have just rescued my father-in-laws 56year old viking bike from his garage. It is a lovely old steel frame with all original parts, very unused in the last twenty years or so.
I would like to get it up and running again but am having difficulty getting wheels for it. They are 27"x1 1/4 but with a 3/8" axle. A 10mm axle will not fit in the drop outs.
Any advice on where to get some wheels from? I am based in Bristol.
I will also need to get some new jockey wheels for a 56 year old campag mech at some point.

Any ideas or help gratefully received.
thanks
Simon

Ebay is your best bet. 27" wheels come up quite frequently. Also keep an eye on the "for sale" section of this forum.

All British hubs will have 3/8" axles as will mst continental hubs sold in this country and dating back to the pre-quick release days. You will need to check this with the seller, however, as both 10mm and 3/8" versions were made.

Life is much easier if you can adapt to 700c. Can't you simply file out the dropouts? They're usually well-endowed with spare metal, you'll hardly be weakening them.

Indeed, and you may have to find some longer drop brakes ... but modern 700 alloy wheels will be a good investment, and tyre choice is much wider too.

I have a lovely pair of 27 inchers if you fancy them. Campag Record 36h small flange hubs, Mavic Mod 3 CD Anodised 27x1¼" rims, Sapim d/b stainless spoked wheels c/w original Campag q/r's. 130mm OLN.

Lovely condition. Bearings fantastically smooth, rims dead true and straight with only minor wear to grey anodised braking surface.

£75 + p&p.

Nearly new Sachs 13 - 32 7 speed freewheel in excellent condition and pair of part worn VGC Panaracer Tourguard kevlar tires/inner tubes also available at extra cost.

You could try Hilary Stone or SJS Cycles, both west Country based.

I'll send you a hub for the front wheel for free and gratis. You just need to build it into a wheel.

But yeah, I'd go for 700c too. There's more tyre choice, and although retrogrouches like me admire classic rims, today's are in a different class to the classic ones, and you can still get them in shiny silver.

thanks for all the advice, will try those shops and if not get myself a 10mm round file. The brakes do have 5/10mm adjustment, so will probably be alright for a 700.
