An option to Credit Cards is "Preloaded Currency Cards".
See Touring and Exped Jan 08 2011. (I would insert a link to it if I knew how).

One other thought - do you really want a credit card?

If touring and only spending small amounts each time, maybe a debit card for ATM withdrawals once a fortnight would be more convenient. If so, then search out the best debit card. It used to be the Nationwide on a Flex account, but they now charge worldwide (althoug still better than most) - don't know about in Europe. You can keep cash in interest savings a/c and load the card account as you need on the net.

Nonetheless, plenty of other debit cards out there to look at.

Don't touch the Post Office pre paid card. It didn't work in a lot of machines. Even when it did you couldn't find out the balance. It wasn't pin number protected. Several restaurants refused it. If lost you would also be up s**t creek. Very poor service.
