Hit and run

Out for a quick ride in North Merseyside/Lancashire this afternoon. Almost home when the driver of a blue Ford KA decided to share a sharp left hand bend with me, resulting in me getting swiped by the rear end and ending up in a heap in the centre of the road. Nice person in the Ford decided not to stop. A lot of nice people did stop to help and some gave witness statements to the police who turned up. Its quite interesting being told to keep still in the centre of a busy road when ones instinct is to get up out of the way. A nice traffic jam formed on both sides :) Nothing broken, just some cuts and gravel rash. Thanks to the paramedic. ambulance staff. police and all the people who helped me.

Sorry to hear about it drogyn, but it's good to hear of so many people willing to help and good luck with the police tracing this low life. Whereabouts did it happen? North Merseyside Lancashire plain is my stomping ground too. Generally ( Sweeping statement alert !!! ) from my past experience, drivers don't seem quite so homicidal as those that can be observed in YouTube vids from other parts. Hope it all heals soon. :)

Glad you are OK and quite right to advise you to stay still. I had someone haul me to a sitting position and pain shot down my back, I could have had a broken spine for all anyone knew, fortunately not.!

Yes indeed what road was this on so we can keep a future eye out for the spot and possibly the car.

Hope the Police find the low-life.

Location is B 5193 in Little Crosby village, junction with Little Crosby Road and Delph Road (nice but pricey cafe up there). Grid ref: SD 31814 01622 (sorry, too set in my ways for GPS). I was travelling from St Mary's Church end towards Crosby but there are a few sharp bends like that on the B5193 towards Hightown.

I dont see how you could give a 10 figure grid reference with any confidence without using a GPS!

My GPS is perfectly happy to use OS grid references by the way.

I was recently given a load of 12 figure references from a local windfarm company for where its windmills are, now that is what I call excessive precision.

I'll buy being able to give a ten figure map reference without a GPS.

My compass has a roamer for 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps and using this, one can certainly get to that accuracy. Although we are at the limits of a map's accuracy, as 10 figures is a 1 metre square.

Apologies to Drogyn for having our irrelevant debate on your thread.

I would think that a 10 figure grid reference was beyond the OS maps level of precision due to the very nature of the map symbols used.

I had a look on my Anquet mapping which only goes to 6 figure and the six figures put you nicely on the turn on the map. 10 figures would let us see exactly where he was lying in the road!

ten figere refs on 1:25,000 maps are no problem, although I would need my glasses these days. I used to be involved in competing and organising a big navigational event and we used to set to ten figure refs and got no complaints from competitors. To ensure accuracy in setting I used a tool tip measurement magnifying glass with scale in the magnified plane. Going to twelve figures is pretty well pointless on anything smaller scale than 1:12500.

More on the OP subject, I was pleasantly surprised how many people rushed to pick me up when I broke my hip as a result of a fall in the middle of Devises last year.

I don't mind off topic, but you can blame a chap called Mr Woodhead - he was one of my Geography teachers at secondary school and liked his maps, added to that it is partly his influence that made me a Geologist so the map reading came in handy - got to be accurate finding your rocks :)
As for the "accident" - doing ok so far but stiif getting upstairs. Colleagues at work being very helpful telling me the shock will hit in a day or two. Hmmmm...

Here? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 52314&z=15

What was your position when he hit you?

Any claim you might have for personal injury or financial losses, for example, repairs to your cycle, is not dependant on the police tracing the driver who hit you. You could make a claim to the Motor Insurers' Bureau.

Irate!

Sorry, a bit flippant. Irate came later.
I was about 1 m out from the kerb, about 1-2 m from the corner when the car came alongside.
Driver squeezed me towards left, flipped me and I ended in centre of road about 1m behind that other vehicle in the picture.
