Hi all
I am just trying to sort out my travel insurance for a long tour of the Americas starting in May.
I am anticipating the trip to take about 2 years without returning to the UK.
I have called the CTC insurance line but was put through to a broker (outside of CTC) who new little about cyling and the nature of such a trip. He stated that I would not get insurred for over 18 months.
I am wondering how/ where people get insurance for round the world rides or rides that go over 18 months.
Does anyone have any suggestions as tired of the speaking to people who don't understand.
Many thanks
Tom

Long tour travel insurance - any ideas?

Re:Long tour travel insurance - any ideas?
Dear Tom,
I just got annual travel insurance from STA Travel, which was over £600. This cost was due to "Cycle Touring" being an added extra activity, and because I was in the USA, where of course any medical bills will be astronomical.
I can also confirm problems with wanting insurance for more than a year long trip. In the end I did not end up being away that long, so I did not solve that problem. The problem with simply lying (and re-booking insurance via a friend staying behind in the UK) is that we all know that insurance companies will look for every single excuse not pay out in the event of a claim.
I must repeat that being uninsured for medical emergencies in the USA does not bear thinking about.
So I can't help you other than to say that cycling the USA was great fun, chiefly because the people were so friendly - lots of offers of overnight accomodation and meals in exchange for yarns over a beer or wine!
Good luck.
