Bicycle Engine Kit

Anyone seen the website http://www.transformercycles.com, just read the testimonials from satistfied customers - especially one form Cambridge describing "hill after hill"...

Its a hillarious website.

Also a US website http://www.bikeengines.com promises 225mpg off their engine kit. With US fuel prices this must be cheaper than walking, and in most states, road legal.

I think for my new job next month I will be cycling without engine kit - its about 10 miles each way. I could do with losing a little bit of weight so it will be a while before I have to start eating extra food....

Have seen it. Know a lad who built one out of an old Raleigh, a two stroke and a washing machine belt. Looks hilarious but is fun to ride, had to register and tax it.

I suppose some would need an engine for all the steep hills round Cambridge

And he succeeded in doing so? I mean he got through the vehicle safety check?

Interesting. Sounds cheap at £200 and a dribble of fuel, but there is also the cost of Single Vehicle Approval, registration, registration plates, VED (if any) and eventually MOT.

Think I'll stick to pedalling.

Probably cheaper and easier to buy a second hand moped!

I think their point is that when you run out of batteries on an electric bicycle you are stranded, whereas with a petrol bicycle engine kit you only have to pedal it to the nearest petrol station.

"90 day warranty on the engine only. 30 days warranty on all other parts". They really must have some faith in their (using the most advanced bicycle engine) technology

For a moped, the pedal-assist ones were phased out of production in about 1976. One also has to consider the social scene available - not motorcyclist or scooterist nor even cyclist. Perhaps an electrically-assisted cycle might be more socially acceptable. 8)

In summary:
1. range limited to 15-40 miles
2. Speed - max of 10-12mph. Dogs will catch you.
3. charging - cost and time
4. cold temperatures reducing battery life, and rain shorting out circuits
5. Costs much more to buy
That's it!

Yeah. Looks a bit Heath Robinson but works quite well. Picture below. Personally I reckon it looks better than the kits you can buy.

I don't think it was (but can't be sure). It rides well enough and is smooth as anything with the engine going.
