Hilarious.

Only Jonty could run the terms "modest' and "five bedroomed" together with a straight face.

It's only a Grade 2 Listed Building, albeit in a Conservation Area, not Grade 1. Nothing especially special. It seems it's of historical interest. Nothing to do with me living there.

Environmental Awareness and the Young

People who don't pay bills don't switch things off, age is largely irrelevant.

My wife is a good example, never paid the utility bills, never turns anything off :)

If I was a Young Person, I would find it very hard to understand why Mum uses the Q7 to nip to the supermarket every day yet is anal about putting stuff for recycling in the correct container.

Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me a couple of years ago when, in the local Waitrose carpark, I saw a Young Mother inserting the third of three kids into the back of the Range Rover. Alongside her was a full (and I mean full) trolley of life's little essentials. The booze, or at least some of it, was in a trendy jute bag, upon the side of which was emblazoned in large green capitals "I'm saving the planet. Are you?" ...
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Shame you didn't have the camera, sounds perfect for Pseuds Corner.

A couple of points in no particular order. Charge the children a nominal sum to cover their use of electricity and see what effect this has on consumption. :?:
Secondly a keep-fit programme for long-term benefit claimants is an excellent idea, provided they are able to do it. Even if they just meet up for a coffee and chat, it gets them out of the house. I have found that my local ctc "cycling for all" scheme has rekindled my interest in social cycling. :D
What is the colour(s) of your cycle?
Which of its benefits would you recommend?

As we're still on the subject of green issues. I think landlords should be required by law to insulate a property, install double glazed windows and to provide gas central heating. I've lived in places with economy 7 heating, which pumps out heat when you don't want or need it and can cost around £90/£100 in electricity, prior to everything else in the depths of winter.

Again, these are far bigger issues than turning the lights off (The majority of lower priced rental places are inadequately insulated/heated).

Freddie - have you noticed some people wearing t-shirts and shorts in the middle of winter? My theory is that central heating has raised their core temperature to the point where they don't feel the cold. :?
Cycling is good for developing one's metabolic rate, i.e. conversion of winter food to body heat.

T shirt and shorts outside?
I think you'll find it works exactly the other way round. It's the people that are well wrapped up because they *think* it's cold you want to look out for! I wear t shirts down to pretty much freezing - although I'm usually moving around, if I were stood still I'd probably wear something with sleeves.

I think it's a nothern thing. I lived in Edinburgh for several years and when I first arrived I went to the doctor because I was so cold I thought there was something wrong with me.
Once I was in the centre of Newcastle on business in January. It was freezing with snow and ice everywhere. I went out for a short invigorating walk in the evening and I've never seen so many skantily clad big girls in one place including the Bahamas.
Some of them seemed to be rolling in the snow.
