Avenue Verte- British Section

My wife and I are planning a tandem trip from London to Paris via the general Avenue Verte route. I find a nice collection of guidance on the French section, but not much on the British portion. We are from the U.S. and thus not very familiar with the area. We will likely begin from the area near Gatwick and had thought we would take the ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe. I am looking for a detailed route map for that portion of the trip. In addition, we will not be in a hurry, so would enjoy and detours or meandering suggestions for the UK portion of the ride. We are pavement type people, but hard pack gravel or other surface suitable for a tandem with wide tires is OK. I have downloaded the NCR21Map.pdf via the CTC site, but found it somewhat confusing. The route did not appear to be continuous. Suggestions and comments are welcome.

Jerry, I have done this route a few times and live in the UK near the NR21 - the following post is my report from my first AV trip in 2009, I have since been back to the AV based outside Dieppe three times i.e. take your time in this area it is great cycling and very beautiful

The UK side of the AV does not really exist (and I suspect never will) though NR21 is for now intended for this purpose. It is a mixed bag, on and off-road, somewhat circuitous and hilly. I frequently take a more direct and still attractive route from where I live just north of Gatwick, mostly along country roads via Lewes to Newhaven. Here's a GMap of this route, you could just cut across from Gatwick and pick it up; getting out of Gatwick might be tricky, which terminal are you arriving at?

If you want I can provide more detail + routes etc if you let me know your e-mail address. Good luck, Graham.

Avoid the NCN route from Brighton to Newhaven - not recommended. Better, as suggested above, to head for Lewes then Newhaven.

The AV on the French side is wonderful - all that a cycle route should be.

Jerry,

I recommend you remove or at least modify the rendering of your email address as I have done. These boards are indexed by the search bots and I fear you could see an alarming rise in spam leaving an intact address.

A different Graham
