Why not? on a long journey people might want to listen to music or radio recordings. Putting earphones in your ears can be dangerous.
This is one solution:

It's antisocial, unnecessary and dangerous - keep your senses for safety and enjoyment of cycling

Definately a no! no!. This would be rated alongside the campsite ghettoblaster and the open windowed chavmobile with a 300W speaker system as the top banana of antisocial behaviour IMHO. You will be riding on your own if you insist on fitting speakers to your bike. Have you ever thought of taking up a career as an ice cream salesman?

It's hardly going to be loud is it? so why is it dangerous?
If anything it will stop pedestrians stepping out in front of you so if anything it is safer.
Radios in cars are unnecessary but they all have one.

If heavy pedal wants to ride alone and doesn't like listening to dicky birds, moo cows and his own thoughts, then it is upto him to do as he wishes. If he were to ride with a group then I expect he would quickly be told where to put the speakers - very dark and not normally accessible. On a club ride many years ago, some charmer brought a radio so that he and others could listen to a football game. He was very quickly put right.

woah. hang on a minute. i was referring to a smart, discreet rider directional speaker no bigger than say a bell that would provide output at a reasonable volume that could only be heard by me. i have no interest in blasting out music for the whole world to hear. i'm also riding alone, out of town - no asbo required here.
as stated, i've ridden a lot in past wearing headphones but that isn't that safe. on the other hand i've driven a car listening to music playing on speakers for around 20 years with no accidents.
thanks for that link gilesjuk, will have a closer look at that.
cheers
ps. no heavy metal i'm afraid, just a bad pun name.

Just put one earphone in your left ear.
You'll be OK.
