Road Tyres for MTB

Post by Hannah_MTB »

Hi everyone,

I am a newbie on here as have found my self more involved in the cycling world and want to ride in a few events this year. I have a Ridgeback MX4 MTB at the moment and can't afford to replace it with a Hybrid or road bike (not sure if i am ready for that jump just yet), but I wanted to get some better tyres for my MTB for cycling on the road a bit more. Not wanting completely no tread but enough so can still fall onto a well maintained track if thats where the route takes me. Also keen to cycle IOW later in the year (and Southdowns Way).

Has any one got any recommendations as I don't have a clue what brands are any good. I am prepared to pay ~£30 each if required but will consider more if come highly recommended.

Cheers

Dozens out there. It really depends if you want a fast-ish puncture-resistant tyre or a heavier and very puncture resistant tyre.

The most puncture resistant seems to the Schwalbe Marathon Plus, but these are quite heavy and can be hard work. Something like the Conti Grand Prix 1 1/8-inch are lighter and livelier. They offer good puncture resistance (well, to me, anyway) but obviously not as much as the Schwalbe.

The Paselas also seem to be favoured here.

Thank you for all your suggestions, These look good. I will have a look at the others too. I havn't suffered from punctures since moving off my parents farm so I think i prefer the sound of the lighter ones. But saying that I hope I don't go out and get one this week!! Cheers, Hannah

Here are some very good incredibly cheap slicks for a MTB (recommended 85psi), I use them:-

I would also consider these:-

I use the 700c version of these on my touring bike.

Also Schwalbe City Jet is a very good and budget priced tyre.

Schwalbe Silento if you want to have some off-road grip (at the budget end of things)? But, as has been said already, it's all a compromise!

If minor tracks and light off road then value for many I'd say schwalbe land cruiser

If it's going to be more road then another + 1 for schwalbe city jet

+1 for the Schwalbe Land Cruiser - friction free centre bead and good knobbles on each side.10 quid or so. The other smoothies recommended here will be completely useless off road. Land cruisers are great for summer use when you do mixed on/off road work.

I've got conti travel contacts 1.75 which are pretty good, have knobbles for cornering off road, are hard wearing and have puncture protection bead to bead. When you buy them new they come complete with inner tubes. I also use Halo Twin rails which are nice and come in various colours. They are pretty wide - 2.2 - a bit of extra weight, and the twin central rails don't last too long, although once they're gone the rest of the tread lasts well. Used slicks or semi slicks in good condition periodically come up for sale on singletrack classifieds forum for a fraction of retail cost.

If you get narrower rims for your bike you could fit Panaracer Ribmo 26x1.25, light but with puncture resistance.

I rate the Schwalbe Land Cruiser too. That's a good price on Wiggle. Chain Reaction also do some good deals.
