Lever changer instead of twistgrip
Lever changer instead of twistgrip
I know little of derailleurs, but have ended up with a twistgrip front SIS triple marked SIS, with a hub gear rear. I want to work the triple with a lever instead. What problems am I likely to face, please?
Re: Lever changer instead of twistgrip
OK just trying to be clear......you have 3 chainrings, with a twistgrip shifter, it says SIS on the shifter.
Obviously, you have a chain tensioner, too, but thats beside the point.
SIS stands for "Shimano Index System"....so that's good, it means that compatible bits are available.
Because its a twist shifter, I think it has to be a Shimano "mountain bike" front mech (the bit that actually moves the chain from ring to ring)....but to be sure, is there anything written on the front mech?
Its important because Shimano "road" and "mountain" front mechs. and shifters don't play nice together!
EDIT....unless you want to use a (drop) bar end shifter, or a non-indexed thumbshifter, in which case as its not indexed, it doesn't matter!

What kind of "lever" were you thinking of and where do you expect to mount it.?
A man can't have everything.
- Where would he put it all.?.

Re: Lever changer instead of twistgrip
Thanks for your responses. The machine is a Concept all suspension presumably "mountain bike". I'm a staid old (84yr) plodder with upswept bars and the suspension protects my aged connective tissue off-road (and over potholes). The mech is marhed Top Swing SIS and Shimano 050 encircled by a styised C. I'll put the lever where I can, as I will only change occasionally according to the terrain. Indexed would probably be preferable, as with end stops on the mech there is only the middle to get right on the cable.

Re: Lever changer instead of twistgrip
The most popular gear shifter for modern mountain bikes is the trigger shifter. These mount on the handlebar just inboard of the brake lever and provide two buttons - press one with your thumb to shift up, pull the other with your index finger to shift down. The most inexpensive model I'm aware of is the Shimano Altus M310, available via that link for £13.46 including postage. This should index correctly with your existing derailleur. If you're reasonably confident with an allen key you should find it quite straightforward to fit, although do make sure to follow the instruction sheet to ensure that indexing works properly.
If you prefer a more traditional friction lever, you could try the Shimano TX50.

Recommend thumb shifters over twist grip- horrible things. I like rapidfire but not ezfire (lever on the top gets in the way during braking)
