Good idea for a thread.
This is the one I posted recently

A Lothian Buses driver who caused the death of a cyclist has been banned from driving for a year and ordered to carry out 180 hours of community service. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that Jill Corps, 42, crashed into cyclist Thomas McKay, 46, while she was at work. Corps, from Southhampton, admitted driving carelessly on 11 February 2009 ...
Of course it's a race...

Here's four I posted on this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=44178&hilit=disqualified

At present, the legal penalties for misusing your vehicle are risible:

1. Cyclist killed on the A1 by driver who admitted to the police she didn't know he was there until he bounced off her windscreen. Guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. Sentence: 21 months prison (to serve half) and two-year ban. Where's the deterrent?
http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Home/Teenagerjailedfordeathoftime-trialcyclist.htm

2. Pedestrian killed by disqualified driver on police bail pending his 8th appearance for driving while disqualified(!) Guilty of causing death while disqualified. Sentence: 15 months prison (out of a maximum two years), a further two-year ban and to take re-test. Where's the deterrent?
http://www.biggleswadetoday.co.uk/news/local/driver_imprisoned_under_new_laws_1_1123928

3. Cyclist killed by driver racing in city street. Guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, no insurance, failing to report accident and failing to stop. Sentence: 4 years jail and 7-year ban. 5 years on (2 years early) he may apply to get his (provisional) licence back. Where's the deterrent?
http://road.cc/content/news/27326-driver-who-killed-cyclist-while-racing-80mph-asks-provisional-licence-back

4. Four cyclists killed by driver of unroadworthy vehicle on icy road. Guilty of three counts of driving with defective tyres. Sentence: £180 fine and six penalty points. Where's the deterrent?
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/58228/Cyclists-death-driver-fined.html

The courts constantly seem to be anti-cyclist (see numerous stories of drivers with 15+ penalty points still allowed to drive juxtaposed with Daniel Caddens prosecution for cycling legally). Until these people are educated on the fact that the law is there for ALL to obey and to protect ALL victims of those who can't be bothered to obey, I can't see it getting any better any time soon.

Apparently, when the train driver walked back down the track to check what had happened, the jockey remarked "Sorry, mate. I didn't see you." (All that from somebody who, with his jockey hat on, would be on his high horse, complaining about drivers going too fast.)

Here's one I've just found.

Drink-driver kills motorcyclist and only gets 3 years!

The incident reported there was his SECOND "sleepwalking" offence and he gets banned for 12 months :?:

Clegg was fined £650, and ordered to pay £300 costs as well as a £15 victim surcharge. His 12-month driving ban can be reduced to nine if he takes part in a drink-drivers' rehabilitation programme.
Will a course on drink-driving prevent him from getting in his car while asleep (actually asleep rather than the brain-off condition which seems to affect many drivers).

Surely, if he's prone to this sort of thing, he should be banned for LIFE.

But I suppose his right to drive outweighs all other road-users right to life

With that amount of alcohol in his system, I'd describe it as more of a drunken stupor than sleep.
Is that going to be accepted as a defence for all drivers who are in a drunken stupor?

Mind you, with it being the second occasion, surely he could also be done for failure to notify the DVLA of a health condition which affected his ability to drive safely.
They should certainly have his licence until the condition is cured, on medical grounds.
And I hope his insurers have been notified of both occasions.
There may be an effective ban through inability to get cover - I certainly hope so.

No deaths, no cyclists involved, but as a reason for not disqualifying a driver, this one has to take the biscuit

Van driver hits cyclist in cycle lane. Stops up the road to check damage to his van. Drives off again.

Claims "had momentary blackout"

12 months jail suspended for 18 months. Banned for 12 months. 200 hours unpaid work.

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/pendle/9122702.Hit_and_run_driver_who_killed_Pendle_cyclist_spared_jail/

If this is all the courts will do why bother prosecuting killer drivers? :x
