Converting 9sp to 10sp. Is it possible?

Post by Mick F »

I have a Campagnolo Mirage Triple 9sp. I bought a 9sp system as it was at the cheaper end of the Campag range. I'm very happy with it.

Can I improve my setup by converting my 9sp RH Ergo to 10sp? By that I mean changing the guts of it - 9 clicks instead of 8, and a smaller pulley to reel in less cable per click.

Also, by adding another sprocket at the back, and putting in thinner spacers to take me up to 10? The sprockets are the same thickness, all it would need would be to alter the spacing, and a new chain.

Can it be done?

If it could, it would be a far cheaper option than replacing the RH lever and a complete cassette.

If it can't, I won't bother with 10sp!

Most of the answers to this kind of question can be found here.

The particular answers to these questions are: yes and yes.

According to Campyonly what it says in Campag's Q&A is wrong and you can indeed alter the Ergopower from 9 to 10 speed. You can also put 10-speed cassette on any hub origianally sold as Campag 9-speed.

If you can't change the ratchet ring yourself there are 2 places in Derby which will. One is Mercian, the other, off the top of my head is something like "Italian Cycle Products". I'm sure someone will refresh my ageing memory banks.

Thanks for that CJ and PW.

The Campag Q&A asks about early Ergo (99-02). The newer ones are a different shape.

I'm going to email Mercian to see if they can supply the spacers and fittings for inside the Ergo unit. Maybe they'll convert the Ergo unit for me with a quick turn round?

We'll see!

Thanks again,
