Advice on tricycles please

I would very much appreciate advice on tricycles please (which I know absolutely nothing about). A work colleague of mine is thinking of buying a tricycle for his 18 year old, 5ft 4 in tall son who has Downs syndrome and does not have perfect balance. Pashley is the only make that springs to mind. The first question therefore is what alternatives might be available? The second question is where can you hire a tricycle to check it is a suitable idea in the first place. My colleague lives in Solihul - the Tissington Trail is the only place I've see tricycles hired out but that is not exactly local. Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Tricycles have a problem in that they are very susceptible to camber.... worse if you have been a bike rider and better if you have no preconceptions.

I would recommend contacting CycleMagic at Leicester who have lots of experience, and offer advice on different aspects, as well as hiring in some cases.... that way you will get all the advice needed and a chance to actually ride

Go recumbent.

Well, more importantly, try before you buy - which it sounds like you are doing anyway.

The other possible alternative is a tandem?

I just Googled "disability cycling clubs UK"......they're going to know, and there's loads of them!

Stratford Bike Hire on The Greenway at Stratford-upon-Avon has a Pashley (or similar) small-wheeled trike for hire .. http://www.stratfordbikehire.com/ - speak to Vic, tell him Rob told you about him

Pedalabikeaway in the Forest of Dean hire a variety of trikes and stranger. They do cater for disabled riders as well and are used to people hiring to try. Gravel tracks, not a million miles from home

Interested to read this as I've been thinking about getting a tricycle - I've had 2 hip replacements and fear falling off a 2-wheeler (only done this once since I was a child) I've not done a lot of cycling, but a 3-wheeler might be the answer.

Any ideas where I could hire one in the West Yorkshire area - Leeds preferably?

Thanks :?

We had a lad in Cov CTC section with a balance problem who rode with us on a trike I believe he had a Pashley, Have you spoken tothem as they are only down the road in Stratford.
I amsure they would be very helpful to you and your son and could help with any questions, possibly assist with try before you buy? Then there is the greenway option.

I would probably ensure there is a differential on the rear axle.

Many thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to respond to my original query. My colleague's son has test ridden a tricycle, and a Pashley is on now order.

Even if you're registered disabled?
