Phone mount recommendations?

Post by dmhouse »

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a device so that I can mount my phone (a Nexus S) onto my bike for navigation and to use it as a cycle computer. There's myriad choice out there and reviews are few and far between so I wondered if anyone had any experiences worth reporting.

Bonus points if it can mount onto the stem because my bars are pretty busy already. Waterproofing or at least light-rain-proofing would be nice too.

Haven't bought one yet, and have no association with them but I was tempted by this one when my current solution keeps failing,

Haven't bought it yet because I'm using a bodge job with a bit of foam, and a

Used stronger velcro straps I had hanging around to secure it to around the foam and my stem, works well for road riding, not so much on the mountain bike. Phone works in case too.

I did actually manage to find some reviews for that one (it's made by Ultimate Addons), and they seem pretty favourable.

I wonder if anyone on the forum has first-hand experience?

I also found the Dahon BioLogic which looks to be a better option if only they made it to fit phones other than iPhones. Ah well.

I have the B+M universal cockpit mount. It seems well made. It stands quite tall and resonates a bit when heading downhill at high speed but it still held the phone secure. I am trying to find a way to attach a strap to my phone as a precaution in case I hit a pot hole hard, but I tend to be a belt and braces person. It is very easy to remove the phone. It can be used in any orientation.

I've not used it extensively but so far so good.

I've stopped using a Biologic Phone Mount and had to use a rubber band to stop my 3GS escaping on rough roads. The plastic wormdrive clamp couldn't be tightened enough to stop the unit rotating on the bars. It was waterproof enough and perhaps the current version is better over bumps.

Yep, first hand experience with the Ultimate Addons case, it's brill. I spent ages trying to find something to mount my HTC desire to my bars, and didn't like the idea of the open clincher ones which aren't waterproof and look... a bit scary, and most of the enclosed waterproof ones are only for isomethings.

The mount for the UA case is really tough, much better than the mounts for any of my Cateye's (maybe that's not saying much! but it's sturdy and survived a hundred and so miles over two days last week on tarmac and woodland dirt tracks without any signs of badness). It has a lanyard too, which is pretty neat because you can tie it round the handlebars as a second line of defence if anything did go wrong in the mount. The case's waterproof credentials look a bit shaky at first glance, because it's made of a sort of neoprene with a plastic window stitched into it, but I gave it a test with lots of tissue paper stuffed inside and subjected it to sink drowning and hose blasting without any signs of water getting in, so it all seems good. There's room in the case to have my rubber bumper/cover sort of thing on the phone, and the zip closure politely lets me plug my dynamo juice in. It's easy to detach the case from the mount too, for when you park up to pop into the shops.

How good is it for being able to see the screen through the window?

And how usable are the phone's buttons and screen? It would be good to be able to at least turn the display on and off to save power.

I have http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/busch-and-mu ... rc=froogle not waterproof but good solid product that works well, fits in seconds.

Put my phone in a clear plastic bag if fear rain.

The window doesn't darken the screen noticeably and it doesn't cause any more reflection than the phone au natural, sometimes a bit of human shade helps to see the screen but that's just the nature of screens in the sun, especially the OLED Desire. The buttons are fine, I ran for a couple days last week without my Dynamo (Err.. I left the only irreplaceable -must not leave at home- cable, at home) so was flicking the screen on and off all the time to save battery and it worked fine, but the Desire power button is really easily accessible, life might be harder on other phones if the power/screen-off button was deeply recessed. (oh, and the other buttons and the screen all work perfectly too, you can still type easily on the soft keyboard)
