Facilities to lock bike at York Show

Post by BryterLayter »

My brother and I are camping with our own tents in the camp site at the York Show. Does anyone know if their is somewhere safe to lock your bike on the campsite, it says lightweight campers have a separate enclosure but would like to know where I can safely secure my bike.
And now we rise
And we are everywhere

At previous shows the campers appeared to be surrounded by weld mesh fencing (like on a building site) so I imagine you could lock to that. Whilst the pickings for a determined thief could be potentially very good the risk of being pulled limb from limb by the massed cyclists should work in your favour

Top and tail both bikes with 2 D locks to make a bulky and awkward self-supporting parking structure?

Or, as people have suggested before, a pair of dog anchors should make a good secure point.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

That doesn’t sound like the lightweight camping area of any of the York Rallies I've been to. The only fencing like that I've seen is round the trade area. There are some steel crowd control barriers scattered around to lock bikes to, but not enough, probably one for every ten tents. The idea of locking two or more bikes together with decent locks is probably the best you can do in the circumstances.

In that case a pair of:

separated by several inches with a D-Lock running through both (so neither can be unscrewed), combined with an alarmed padlock or similar should make yours amongst the least "steal-able bikes in show".

Of course if the alarm is too sensitive to wind then you'll be garotted.

PS - The above version needs a spot of weld to complete the triangle at the top... Try a local garage.

I'm attending the York Cycle Show next week, will be camping on the Knavemire and the bike will be there too. In the last three years, I've only attended the show on the day. The last time, I camped there with the bike, I took a basha, which is a sort of a tarp and converted the basha into a make-shift shelter. At the time, I had The North Face Solo 12 which is long gone, but the basha was strung from the Solo 12 and over the bike, which was upside down and it worked. A lot of the campers, admired my work of art  and maybe why not again. Trouble is, I have a new tent and not sure if it will work with that tent or not. I could take the bike cover, I got from the Pound shop and just use to disguise the bike and keep it dry. Anyway, the bike cover are good value and only a quid. :D

We place metal crowd barriers around the campsite to allow the lightweight campers to secure their bikes, JT
