Has anyone had odd things said to them when telling someone you are about to embark on your bike travels.

I'm planning to ride across Australia starting in September taking up to three months and whilst telling my neighbour that I would be away for three months. He replied "I hope the weather stays nice" Like........

D
Anyone else had odd or underwhelming comments?

I complained to the warden at Lochranza SYHA about the state of the cycle shed and how I wasn't going to put two grand's worth of bike in there.

See asked, "Why would you want to bring a bike like that on holiday with you?"

I was speechless.

Haven't got anything original to add, but there are some great quotes about cycles and cycling here... http://www.quotegarden.com/bicycling.html

Said to me, as I sat in a café eating a bacon sandwich and drinking tea, 'YOU'VE RIDDEN FROM WHERE?'. I just told them I'd ridden there from home, 10 miles away!

Doh!

Some years ago, when Ross-in-Wye was a regular port-of-call for me, I had a conversation with a mate who had to drive the 1/4 mile to my local every night.

NoLegs: Do you really cycle all the way to Ross-on-Wye?

Me: Of course not! I ride to Stow-on-the-Wold and walk the rest.

Q "What do you do if it rains?"
A "Put my umbrella up"

Regular question to ride guide by novice cyclist. "What gear should I be in for this hill, 2/6 or 3/3?"
All of which means nowt to me as my gears aren't numbered and any how I don't know what ratios they have or how strong the rider is.
Usual answer, "Just change to whatever gear allows you to climb easily" :D

OT I know but my brother always said when you get two cyclist together, it's only a matter of minutes before they are talking about gear inches.

When I tell people I've cycled 60 miles that day, quite a few ask if I'm doing it for charity. The greater public seem to have no idea what their bodies can easily do any more. Bizzare.

A few weeks ago, I had this conversation...

H: Where did you cycle from?
me: ................ (about 10 miles)
H: That's a long way. And you're going back?
me: Yes.
H: Huh. I get out of puff just going the 1/4 mile from my house to here.
me: My four-year-old can cycle farther than that.
<silence>
me: I guess that wasn't the most diplomatic thing to say.
H: How far can your four-year-old ride? No. Don't tell me. I really don't think I want to know.

There is cycle path over there.
Answer. Well buy a bike and you'll understand why I do not use it.
You could buy a good secondhand car for that
You cant possibly get there that quick it takes me longer in the car.
Yes but where are you going for your real holiday.
bicycles are uncomfortable
You shouldn't ride 2 abreast

I remember that shed! There were several Rohlhoff jobbies in there.

The one that gets me every time is "can't you drive?"

On one occasion I was told by a Lexus driver that he wouldn't buy a bike because they were SOOOO expensive!
