bar end lever wear?

10 year old Shimano bar end levers worked fine until recent change of cassette, chain and gear cable, plus clean-up of Deore rear changer including new jockey wheels. Everything set up in the correct way. Indexed shifting is OK low to high, but jumps two in the middle section from high to low. "Ghost" changes also occuring. Is this all due to wear in the bar end lever indexing? Any other advice?

Abandon the indexing and just rely on friction. That's what I did when my 7 year old bar end shifters stopped clicking properly.
With hindsight - I don't see the point of indexing as friction-only changers work perfectly well, if not better.

Did you dismantle your bar end levers to replace the cable because what you describe is symptomatic of incorrect assembly. To assemble correctly the levers must be in the position that selects the smallest cog, highest gear on the back for right hand lever, lowest on the front for left hand and the square projection on the plastic part the lever fits onto must face downward. If you look on Shimano tech docs there should be some instructions and diagrams.

as above - easy check; does the lever move the same amount for each click? if not it's more than likely assembled incorrectly.

Thanks for all your comments. Have done a re-setup and it works much better with only occasional slip.
May have to resort to friction changing (but indexing is very seductive).

Check the indexing ring, I had one were the shifter would work fine
for a while, then I'd find the shifter crept part way out of indexing mode,
causing wonky shifting. Shifter was bought used, 8 speed, so they
can wear out after a decade or so.
