Hi, I am considering going down to London from Shrewsbury and was looking for advice as to a safe route, various people have suggested the A49 but I feel it is rather to busy for cycling,

Re: Shropshire to London
The first of those goes past the end of our road. I have to say, the second would be a considerably more attractive way to get past Brum. And as you approach the A449 there are two refueling options. The pub on the canal bridge does the usual rolls etc. Alternatively, at the next waymark, carry on ahead instead of turning into Doctors lane, and about half a mile will get you to a garden centre with a serious cake counter in the restaurant
Pricy, but very cakey! cyclists have been seen to have been served.
To clarify, this is described as coming from the Shrewsbury end.
