I am planning to do LEJOG soon using a bicycle hired in the UK, but my home insurance company here in Canada will not insure it (they will insure my own bike, but!!). Checked with some insurance cos in Britain; they insure it only for UK residents. I plan to check with some other Canadian insurance cos. Any suggestions?

Its possible that insurance will be included as part of the hire charge.

The company I am hiring it from, Action Bikes of London, does not provide insurance. Checked with several companies in the UK and here in Canada; no luck :( Perhaps this is something bicycling clubs can take up with insurance companies?

I was under the impression that the cycle hire company would have to have some form of insurance cover on the bikes to allow them to operate a hire business. What exactly do you want insurance cover on, you or the bike?

The bike (because I have my own health and life insurance, etc). Would like to be covered for the bike being stolen or damaged, and also for liability (if I hurt someone else with the bike). Same way as for a car. Funny thing is, my home insurance company here covered me last yr for Ireland; but then I had my own bike. They won't cover a hired bike, which does not make much sense to me.

Have you explored your travel insurance? It might well cover you for things you rent on holiday. I know many policies do for rented ski equipment.
