Hitch for Burley trailer

I've picked up a second hand Burley trailer which is proving great fun already. However, the axle hitche I've got is too big for my axle. I've heard there's a smaller one. Is there a standard axle size in UK (I've got an old Raleigh Record)? Does anyone know where I might get a suitable hitch?

You don't say which trailer it is, but you can get the genuine item shipped over from the States if you order direct from Burley - follow the link to "Trailers" then "Hitches".

I can't see where you are in the country from your profile, but where I live some bike hire companies can get Burley spares if you're prepared to wait a few weeks.

Additionally, other makes of hitch can be adapted (and might even be a straight swap) for your Burley. I like the Burley standard hitch even though I have a Carry Freedom on my trailer right now. But you might like to try Bikes and Trailers for Chariot, Montare, Weber, and Croozer hitches, or Carry Freedom for their hitches, but note that the Carry Freedom hitch usually moves the trailer more to the left of the centreline of the towing bike than do most other hitches.

An alternative

There is a system called the "Weber Hitch" available from a number of outlets
www.bikesandtrailers.com is simply one, www.amba-marketing.com may also be able to help.

These can be retro-fitted to trailers, one part attaches to the bike, the other to the trailer. Compatability will depend however on the diameter of the towing arm tubing.

They can usually be modified. For example, the drawbar on my trailer is too large in diameter for a Carry Freedom hitch, so I cannibalised an old quill extension (which is the right dia for CF hitches) to make an adapter.

If the drawbar is too small in diameter, you can often sleeve it to fit the new hitch; if it's too large, you can often fit a smaller tube into the existing drawbar and sleeve that to fit the hitch. Of course, the latter might also involve removing some of the original drawbar so that the finished assembly is the right length - and so isn't for the feint of heart!
