I have now received the following letter from Northamptonshire Police. quote - ' Thank you for the copy of correspondence sent to Cambridgeshire Constabulary concerning the driving of foreign registered lorries within the United Kingdom.
Within Northamptonshire we are very aware of the issues you raise. We actively research all safety camera activations involving foreign registered vehicles and will target repeat offenders. With regard to mobile phone usage, we also run enforcement campaigns throughout the year. These are linked to both regional and national initiatives.
We also run specific campaigns targeting lorries, again linked to broader initiatives and involving partner agencies such as the Vehicle Operators Standards Agency (VOSA) and H.M. Customs and Revenue.
I hope the information I have provided above helps allay some of your concerns and would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for your interest. Inspector N.Rickaby.
Thank you reJohn for your support in this matter, its so nice to read posts from courteous and polite people - the rest of you can now get on with your ranting and raving at women about something else. You wonder why they wont ride bikes, well, I know !

(extract from Kettering Evening Telegraph)
Motorists in Northamptonshire are being warned to take extra care on the roads following an increase in the number of foreign drivers in the area. One in seven lorries using motorways in the county is foreign and driven from the left-hand side, making it very difficult for drivers to see all areas of the road. The Freight Transport Association has launched an awareness campaign in a bid to cut the number of accidents caused by 'side swiping' where lorry drivers change lanes into the path of other vehicles. A spokesman for the Highways Agency said " When left-hand drive HGVs change lanes on our roads, the risk of sideswiping an overtaking vehicle is increased due to a blindspot. "Anybody who has driven abroad will appreciate the potential confusion of driving on the wrong side of the road. We are urging drivers to take care."
(Diane says " Thats strange, everytime a foreign HGV overtakes me on a motorway I can always see his face in the nearside mirror." What will they think of next ?)
