Telford to Wolverhampton Route Advice.
Telford to Wolverhampton Route Advice.
Guys,
Calling anyone who knows the Shropshire area.
For my commute home I'm currently catching the train from Telford to Wolverhampton and then cycling the 11 miles to Great Barr.
Now the weather is picking up I thought I might as well cycle the entire journey, at least when it ain't raining.
I was hoping to avoid the Dual Carriageways to get me from Telford to Shifnal and notice that NCN route 81 seems to run between these places. I work very close to the Train Station (on the Town Centre side) and wondered where I might pick up route 81.
Or do you have any other route advice if you think NVN route 81 is a bit pants?
Many thanks in advance advice.
I will be grading your advice on helpfulness, comprehension and humour with 5 points for each making a maximum of 15 points. Submissions plagiarised from the internet will be given 0 points (Are you listening Mr Blair?).

Are you referring to reports that state that if you cycle in Telford you are likely to be arrested for the little know offence of "cycling safely and within the law"?

The chap you need to ask is David Holman - I think you'll find him through Wolves on Wheels at http://www.wolvesonwheels.co.uk/joomla/ his e-mail and phone are on the site under Contacts
He has been involved in the Sustrans route from Wolvo to Telford - I've ridden part of it, IIRC no problems. Not sure about Wolvo to Brum unless you want tio use the canal path

I've never had any trouble using the A464 between Shifnal and Tettenhall. Afraid I can't comment on the sustrans route as it was built after I moved away.
My scenic summer route would be to go down to Ironbridge via the Silkin Way, S along the road on the E side of the river, then up the steep hill out of the gorge, across the A442 to Brockton, turn R then 1st L and follow road to Ryton, R to Beckbury, L, past the chuch and L at top of slight climb to Burnill Green, R then L, past Patshull, to Pattingham and then on to Wolves.

'm OK for Wolves to Great Barr, I already cycle that.
Because I'll be using the road bike, I won't use the canal (NCN 5 I think) because it just isn't suitable for my road bike. It's a great route on my MTB though.
TBH, I'm also OK from Telford to Wolves, but I wondered about the Sustrans route or if somebody knew a good cycling route that didn't follow the main roads, Si's route sounds alright.
My onl concern is that it wil be my commute home and is likely to take me 2 and a half hours, so I don't want to go too far off the straight route.
I know, I want the moon on a stick >;o)

Sounds like an interesting route, I'll have a look.
Cheers!

I'm not sure that you are being at all fair. From the rest of the posts on this thread perhaps it is merely imaginative promotion of Sustrans routes. (PS I appreciate that this is 'nul points' for helpfulness
..... sorry if I confused you, I wasn't advocating the Sustrans route - merely that Dave Holman would know the route - by road as well as NCN. IIRC I did a ride from Wolves to Telford with him one day and I don't recall going on any off-road - I do remember the cafe (Spider's Web ??) on the main road at Cosford, excellent bacon sandwich

Better late than never, an unrealted google search brought me to this query and I know this route pretty well.
From shifnal you want the Holyhead Rd, which is undullating through some nice Villages. Keeping following the road and it takes you into Wolverhampton via the posher areas
If you fancy one of the spiders webs fantastic bacon sandwiches you need to make a left turn (when coming from Telford to Wolves) at Bowling Green Lane or Cross Lane and ride though the village of Cosford.
