flying gate
Does anyone know of a flying gate, from 70's onwards that is in need of a very warm semi -retirement home here in Townsville Queensland Australia? I rode a bit with Trevor when I was younger, still ride (mountainbike endurance racing) but would dearly love to source either a full bike or frame. I am well able to refurbish/ TLC a bike that needs it, and will pay market value. (So long as the AU$ doesn't freefall! ho)
Please search your collections/ friends collections/ etc to assist.
thanks.

I am an avid Flying gator and a freind of Trevor (!) and will shortly be selling a 22 1/2" Gate from the 70's, it is a very short wheelbase time trail machine with the odd Zeus rear ends which arfe forged "track" ends with an integral gear hanger . Would this fit the bill (please note it is VERY SHORT,ie about 1 1/2" pedal ovelap. Only real reason for sale is it's too small for me and I have now aquired a 23 1/2" which I have just finished. Give trevor an e mail : jarvistandp@aol.com I know he sometimes is aware of available secondhand gates that might fit the bill.

Can I advise against posting email addresses in forums? It's a good way of getting spammed to smithereens.

How many tins? I could do with a bit more meat in my diet.

Thanks for the e mail advice, I am a bit green! But will take note in future.
If I had not had an e mail last night I would be really happy to look at your flying gate, but Trevor himself has actually offered to help me out, amazing man!!! So I should be great now.
Many thanks though and who knows I may aim to get two so please post when you are selling.

Flying Gate - that brings back memories. I am not a friend of Trevor Jarvis nor have I ever met him but back in 1980-1 I managed Bob Carey's short lived bicycle shop in Tottenham while he trained daily on his Flying Gate. Bob was a professional rider for a Flying Gate kitted racing team whose name I have forgotten. When I decided to return to NZ via a cycle tour of the west coast of the USA Bob gave me one of his precious Flying Gates. I had a frame builder (Barry Chick?) add a couple of lugs so I could mount a carrier. Everyone told me I was mad using this thoroughbred as a touring bike. I rode from Los Angeles to Vancouver over 8 weeks fully laden and the only mishap was an exploding Shimano casette. My cycling partner generously offered to hitch to the nearest town for a replacement. What a great machine it was. Back in Wellington some [rude word removed] opened a car door on me and the frame concertinaed. For years I lived in hope that I would find a frame builder in NZ willing to straighten me out but alas the nearest thing to a frame builder there at the time was your local welder building 5 barred gates!

This has nothing to do with the thread, but why do you call yourself Ribblehead? Do you live there, or near - or do you, like me, just think you've come to paradise when you get there? It's just 50miles for me from home, and with large potations of grub for small prices at the Blindbeck Tea Rooms at Horton-in-Ribblesdale it makes a superb Spring/Autumn day out.
On some days, there is staff at the railway Station who will make you a cup of tea for a very modest price, and from the station platform, you can see all of the three peaks.
Occasionally there's a steam hauled train.
As to the thread, I went to Grammar School in Bradford, and passed Billy Baines' shop every day on the way to school. I pressed an envious nose against the window on a daily basis, but by the time I could afford hand-built frames he'd stopped building. I bought Pennines for as long as Johnny Mapplebeck was building.
This thread has brought back some memories.
Re: flying gate
Hi good to know I am not the only eccentric out here! I remember riding with Trevor and some of the bike club guys in about 1984, Trev built a 4 seat gate, with him at the helm, regularly breaking wind to the shock and awe of the 3 guys behind him. Trev was playing with ideas to get rid fo the deadspot and staggered all 4 cranks only hassle was around every corner they would break out in argumants as to who would have their inside foot down to grind the ground! It was huge fun and I was trying to keep up on my meagre 6 speed cobbled together bike, on the flats and downhill they annihalated me!
He certainly is a huge character and tribute to him that the company is going strong today (long long waiting list) when the actual design dates back to 1930's....

Hey Arnold 9494 trevor has ggone a bit ccold with no reply to me so whilst I figure it is rude to rush a craftsman, I also firmly believe in plan B's!
could you email me or post details of your bike I would love to know the specification, frame size condition etc? - Any photos?
thanks Tim Binns.

If not paradise, pretty close.
Get up onto one of those three peaks on a quiet day and you are getting closer. Then there is "The Loo With The View" in the pub. Camping barn and wild campsite behind the pub. Pity that the camp site, of hundreds of years standing, is being destroyed by wannabe, Bear Grills stylee, arsonists though.
Great place to get snowed in, in the inn.
Re: flying gate
Hi if I could close this thread now, Trevor has kindly been in touch and I will be getting a brand new frame soon, so thanks for your interest/ help and keep the pedals turning. (bit tricky here at the moment as I have to dodge tropical thunderstorms and searing 35 degrees temps - gotta love rainy season!)
