EDIT: Just found a cheapo Chinese one on ebay with a 7mm shank and a funny flat metal key - should be good enough for my Thorn RT. Check ebay first before posting on forums!
Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
Does anyone know where I can get a lightweight nurses' lock? I've got an Axa Defender but it weighs quite a bit so I don't use it. It's not for resisting attack it's just for convenience at cafe and corner shops etc. Also did there used to be locks that fitted to the canti bosses with a bar that flopped down into the spokes?
Please don't post about the D-lock I should be using and how my bike will get stolen by a gang with a hiab if I don't!

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
I bought one in a clearance sale from Gearshift / Freewheel / Two wheels good a few years ago, intending to use it on my shopping bike. I never got around to using it and although I usually never chuck anything away, I think I made an exception for this bit of junk. I'll have a look when I'm next in my garage, but I don't think it's still in there.hufty wrote: ... Decathlon do this:

I recently bought a lightweight luggage type lock from Decathlon (can't see it on their website) which does the job well. They come in several colours which, bizarrely, are priced differently. Most of them were £7.99, but I got a lime green one (not easy to overlook if you drop it at the roadside) which was £2.99, but otherwise identical! I looked to see whether Decathlon price their bikes in such an apparently random fashion; no such luck.

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
I've seen quite a few roadies using these:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/squire-retracta ... -lock#more
They are definitely not for anything but the briefest of stops.

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
That looks excellent!
If Wiggle still did them, I'd buy one.
I wonder if they are available somewhere else?
I often pop into town to the bank/grocer/delicatessen etc and lean bike up outside whilst keeping an eye out. Locking up "normally" for a brief stop is a bit of a pain, and you have to carry the lock with you too.
That retractable pocket sized lock looks like just what I'd use.

Mick I think I saw something like that in Aldi about a week ago.

Thanks.
They have them at Amazon. Just Googled them.
Aldi aren't very convenient from here, nearest is in Plymouth 20odd miles away. It may be an excuse for a ride there, though I would need a lock to go in!

Mick it was not the cycling stuff for sale last week but before that. So unless you want a reason to do the ride, cycling gloves maybe. It might not be worth going.

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
This chap is very helpful (bought a couple of Spanninga mudguard lights from him over the weekend) and he has a good selection of nurse's locks. Although the postage from NL is not cheap, the difference is compensated by how much cheaper the locks are in the Netherlands... http://www.topworld.nl/catalogsearch/result/?q=ringslot
Nurse's locks are 'ringslot' in Dutch, which helps when googling.
Also, this is very similar to the Wiggle pocket cable lock, but is key, not combi, and like the Wiggle one it can be cut easily... http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLq ... 142c003252

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
I have those wire/combination locks for my bikes (except the town bike). I originally bought the 'quality' branded version, but found some cheap copies going for £1.30 locally. In this instance, there really is no point in going for the Squire version over the cheapy - they aren't any better at the security aspect; in fact they're essentially identical. Both are just enough as a deterrent in a low crime area. And I wouldn't both with a key version either.

Just received one from Spa. £9.00iandriver wrote:I've seen quite a few roadies using these:

Lovely simple bit of kit and just what I want for "the briefest of stops". It'll fit in my little tool stuff sack behind my saddle and can be there and available if and when I want it.
Super!
Thanks for raising this item.

Re: Lightweight frame lock (nurses lock)
I had one of these retractable locks. Arrived at garden centre for coffeestop. Locked bike. Then realised I had wrong key on keyring. Spent five mins borrowing a pair of pliers from the garden centre to liberate my bike. Asked one of the later arrivals to lock my bike to theirs. I strongly recommend these types of lock for ease of use and misuse!
I later 'upgraded' to a lightweight woven cable with a small 'Squire style' shackle lock.

I've got something very similar from years ago with Halfords branding. Abus also do one.
