I have a 26.8mm seatpost I would like to fit into a 27.2mm seat tube.

Is this possible or are shims of 0.4mm thickness unavailable?

thanks

You can always use beer can aluminium - not joking, the tolerances are extremely tight at 0.1mm. Try cutting out with scissors, lay it flat on a table and file the rough edges, then wrap round...sounds like you need two layers.

Brass shim is very easy to obtain: try googling "brass shim" and see what you can find. Alternatively, try "stainless shim" which should unearth some suppliers.

Failing that, what size piece do you need ? I have a tin of brass foil 'shimstock' in various thicknesses somewhere, and can easily post a bit to you.

0.4 mm is one of the standard thicknesses for shimstock. One thickness would be very much better than two - less likely to slip, and less likely to cut fingers etc!
Steel should be easy to find, and brass, but stainless might prove costly.
Brass would be easier to thin if "easing" required.

wouldn't a 0.4mm shim wrapped around a 26.8mm post, make an OD of 27.6mm?

If you say so

Readily available steel shim thicknesses are: 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.125, 0.15, 0.175, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50, 0.65 mm.
Caveat emptor!
