The only reason I thought of upgrading is because I am an old school mountain biker. Back in the early 90'sanything other than DX (showing my age) or XT was deemed to be rubbish. If this is not the case now then I apologise. MTb ing was always quite a posey sport and anything other than the best was sneered at.

If there is little difference these days, why go to XT levels

It used to be the case that XT hubs were the bees knees but that all went wrong when Mr Shimano began using alu axles in them,now they don't last :| .
As for the rest of the XT kit its no more durable than LX or base Deore,as you say theres a lot of snobs and poseurs about :?
