In some cultures they've had a very nasty function indeed. See Athol Fugard's novel 'Tsotsi' (now a film) about street gangs in apartheid Soweto. Sharpened bike spokes were the murder weapon of choice.

Keep your fingers away from rotating wheels.

I used a modified old spoke at the week end to hold the two ends of the chain and allow me to push the pin back in (with the appropriate tool 
)
