29" wheels

Post by chesram »

Does anyone ride on or have experience of 29" wheels? What is the availability of tyres/inner tubes to suit?

I've got a 29er hybrid. I have 25mm inside diameter rim so I can run tyres from 35mm to 55mm.

There's a good choice of tyres I started with some slightly knobbly 45mm tyres and then switched to some slicker 38mm tyres which are quite a bit faster.

I run 70 psi on the rear and 45 at the front and the ride is very comfy not harsh at all. I ride on road and on trails daily. Going forward I'd like a tyre with some more tread on the shoulders to give me a bit of off road grip.

Tyres to consider are:

Schwalbe Marathon / Kojak / Big Apple / City Jet.
Panaracer Paselas
Vittoria Randonneour Hyper or City
Continental Top Contact/Sport Contact

Trouble is choosing which tyre. I'm going to try Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour next and see what happens.
Was 93.4kg now 78.3kg

Next target 74.0kg

So, are these rims the same as 700c ones for cx or 700c hybrids etc?

Yes, 700c, or 622 bead (seat) diameter if you want to use the ETRO system. (much clearer, IMO)
Of course, rufty-tufty mountain bikers couldn't possibly call them the same as namby-pamby roadies do.
Touring cyclists have been doing "roughstuff" on our 700c's ever since they stopped making 27" wheels. (which are a bit bigger than 700c's)

The quest for a larger diameter easy-rolling MTB tyre settled on 622 diameter. I wonder why they didn't go for the extra 8mm diameter of the old 27" ? Many big tyre makers have still got the manufacturing facilities in place for this size, and 630mm is a nice round number :) .

there's a few of us riding off road on 635s...a better size yet as it's bigger & still in use in asia and NL, where as 630 is just obscure off this island
