North Cape rip off !

It appears that the privilege of cycling the last 100m to the 'most northerly' point in Europe is going to cost us. Call me a tight [rude word removed], but I object to shelling out just to be allowed to join the coach parties queueing for a piccie at the steel globe. Does anyone know the 'opening times' for Nordkapp Inc. next May 2012 when we expect to arrive. We just want to slip in when the ticket booths are closed, cycle to the end of the road get a pic, and then start our journey south. OK we're as bad as the next tourist for going there in the first place, and trying to sneak in might be a tad illegal ... but we are willing, by saving the price of admission, to pump the money back into the Norwegian Tourist economy in other ways (eg 2 nights campsite fees or 1/2 pint of beer!)
Thanks for any suggestions ... all in the strictest confidence of course

Sounds a bit like the cost of admission to Lands End - a total rip off and a desecreation of a once beautiful headland. I prefer to go to the Lizard instead.

We weren't charged for car parking at Lands End last year at the start of my Lejog.

Cant seem to find anything in regards to 2012, but in 10/11 the opening hours for May was:

01.05. - 17.05. 11:00 - 15:00
18.05. - 17.08. 11:00 - 01:00

There is much ruckus over this over here in Norway as well. Will refrain from categorizing the prizing bits because it will most likely be in breech of the swearing policy...

The most 'northerly point' by car is probably more correct

Hi
Eurovelos 1, 7 & 11 all start / finish at North Cape. If you have any links / resources that you are using, would you mind letting me know so that I can include them on the relevant sections of http://cyclingeurope.org . It does seem a bit off charging for people to access... Good luck!
Andrew

I would say, how about walking to the real northerly point instead (it's roughly a daywalk as a round trip from the road a few km back from Nordkapp), but unfortunately in May the snow cover would likely make that a difficult walk.

Thanks for the info. If the times stay the same for 2012, it looks like we might plan our arrival for 15.05 on the 16th May !!

Thanks for the suggestion. We've considered that too, and it may still be a possibility, but depends (as you say) on the weather/snow conditions. (We won't have the footwear etc. for a walk in snow)

I or we have never spent a penny at LE carpark. No one's ever asked us to.

We Paddies cannot understand the Englishman's obsession with finishing the trip according to custom!
I and my wife and another Irishman cycled Coast to Coast in England this summer with British friends, all of whom HAD TO dip their wheels in the North Sea. Didn't bother us one way or another! Why should it.
As Mr.Spock would say.. "Illogical Captain!"

Well said But its peoples obsession and not something that the English have all the rights too

Yup this kind of "sucking money out of sucker tourists" is just another reason not to go to touristy places......I bet if you went to the 3rd most northerly point in Europe it would be just as nice and less busy than the first (and cheaper apparently....)

Wouldn't that be a nice theme for a trip "the 3rds" 3rd highest mountain, 3rd biggest lake, 3rd runner up award winning beer...........

In the end it is about having fun doing your trip and not just grabbing bragging rights....(IMO!!!)

Thinking about it, you're absolutely right ... in fact I think you ought to put a trip like that together ... and I'm sure you'd get plenty of takers! (... but 'collecting 3rds' might itself become obsessive !!! )

Something like this? ---> http://www.shanecycles.com/africa Not cycling Cape to Cape, Not epic, Not an expedition, and NOT taking the shortest or quickest route. And probibly wont keep track of how far I've cycled. Who cares if its 20,25,30000km. Ooh and I will be taking a lift, bus, train or plane from time to time.......

Just popping out for a ride......

What a magic trip you've planned! Hope it goes well and you enjoy the ride ... and what you said has struck a chord ... it's the journey, not the destination. We should have known better
Good luck and thanks ...
