Dyno hubs
Re: Dyno hubs
I've built a wheel with it's nutted (rather that QR) brother, the N20. They're identical otherwise.
It's not lightweight, but neither am I. It's a nice hub, and dirt cheap for the quality.

I got one about 8 or so years ago from st john st cycles. Until last year I thought the resistance was very low=negligable when switched off. Actually it is the same off as on. Which just goes to show it really is negligeable. I have been on tour and fairly quick club runs with it. It is a very good buy at that price. I would probably pay a bit more for the 70or72 for psychological reasons if I get another.
Re: Dyno hubs
There used to be a 'bicycle reassemblers for charity' place in Kidderminster.
They sold front wheels with Sturmey Dynohubs for £5. I took a test bulb and leads at sorted out five decent working 36 and 28 hole Sturmey Dynohubs. 32 hole are rare and I'm still looking. I have the LED front lamp design fully sorted for the day I acquire the 32 hole Dynohub.
They are 3.0 W. 6 V and not a lot different from £35 worth from SJS.
Two are in use now without any problems. One 28 hole in my Raleigh 20 and one 36 hole in a 'winter wheel' on my Sister's commute bike. I sold the others for £10 each.....
Find a well established LBS and ask if they have any junk bikes with a SA Dynohub. Build a wheel for winter use.
PS I thought about a Schmidt SON with disc fitting, but £220,,
, I'll stick with battery P7 lenser on that bike.

What the place did was build good bikes from parts salvaged from other bikes and donated the rebuit bikes to charity.
Everything they didn't use was put in a pile of stillages for disposal at some time in the future. I gave them £5 for each wheel I pulled out of the 'scrap skip', so my conscience is clear.
When a member of my club offers me £10 for a SA Dynohub, I take the offer.
And if we're talking charity, there will be a sponsor form winging its way to you so you can donate towards my London to Geneva Red Cross ride next May.
I'm putting up £500 of my own money to go on that ride with three other guys from Coventry Red Cross Office.
The company I work for ( Land Rover ) are stumping up £1200 to let us stay in decent hotels, providing a vehicle and trailer, and a LOT of food. That's as well as them donating 20 bikes to British Red Cross for use in 'difficult to access' woodland situations.
So next time you're at a XC MTB event and a Red Cross person attends to your wounds,,,,,,
Ah, Maytime in Switzerland... the flowers will be blooming.

Sorry about raising an old thread: do people have a preference between the solid axle dynamo hubs with cap nuts and the QR ones? Just puzzled why solid axle variants seem to be so common. Is it just down to nickability?
Re: Dyno hubs
Probably. The Schmidt ones have an allen key skewer rather than a Q/R cam type.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!
Re: Dyno hubs
Anyone experience of the Novatec hub? Thinking of building one into a front wheel for my winter bike.

I hope I am not being picky, but if by "they" in the above quote you mean the old, classis dynohub, I think you have the wattage wrong. Sheldon Brown confirms that the wattage is 1.8. I would imagine a good led lamp, like yours must be, could make a good lamp with that wattage. With the old incandescents getting the bulb wattage right did matter. For all I know it is much less critical these days. Is this right?
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Re: Dyno hubs
There've been several positive reports of the performance of modern LEDs powered by old Sturmey dynohubs. I believe I've seen it discussed on this forum.
