I went on a family day out yesterday to Rutland water with my wife, grown up sons & their girlfriends.
We went into the Giant bike shop (only sells Giant bikes) I was expecting to be drooling at all the bikes and that my wife would be dragging me out under protest but quite the opposite.
I had a quick look at all the shiny expensive bikes, looked at the car racks and left.
I was underwhelmed by the shiny bikes and was not interested in any of them.

Could this be down to the fact that now in my 50s, I am looking seriously about what I have, what I need and trying to declutter my life, for example, I recently sold 2 racing bikes (one mine, one was my late father's) that I didn't enjoy riding and can't remember the last time I rode, 1 hardtail mountain bike that I bought 6 years ago with the best intentions of off roading and rode twice and the folder that I bought 4 years ago and kept in my car boot to use for rides when on business trips and used once.
Or could it be down to the fact that I like tinkering with old bikes, simple technology such as non indexing gears and modern stuff is too complicated?

I live a couple of doors away from a Specialized Concept Store so I go in from time to time. Their bikes a beautiful and usually they look down their noses at me when I'm walking around and buying bottles from the sale

The way to gain respect at any bike shop is to chain your Raleigh 20 to a lampost right outside and walk in wearing running shorts, a teeshirt and training shoes with your quads, hamstrings, gastrocs and solius bulging.
And a funny sun tan that ends half way up your thighs.

Even better, doll up your Skoda estate with trade stickers and a multi bike roof rack and park it right outside the door.

A clubmate got the snooty cold sholder when he parked his bike at a motor caravan dealers so he went to another one to make his very expensive purchase of a brand new 'van.
