i hope the tea shop as a no-smoking policy.all the street smoking in uk towns a citys is not only very unnhealthy for pedestians but also extremly annoying.
bus stops are amongst the worse places when i dont have a hanky handy to cover my nose and mouth,im forced to hold my breath untill i am out of the danger zone.and too often when walking a smoker, will pass and walk in front of me. to avoid passive smoking i have to cover my mouth and nose with an hanky.if it is a long street the torture can continue for a long time.of course the smoker is,or chooses to be, unawhere of the misery he/she is causing.i would like to see a law restricting lung roasters to smoking only when stationary.with an on the spot fine for smoking when moving.
also a similer law for mo phones because phoning pedestrians are are forgeting the basic considerations of public wlking.they seem to think there mobiles are status symbles that give them the right of way.oot

Good question hubbers - my response is in serious mode however.

People can smoke and use mobiles as much as they like for me - what needs banning, on pain of life imprisonment, is motoring.

I went to a pub somewhere in the middle of Oxford that had two beer gardens, the one for smokers was small and nearly empty, the much larger one was full of people enjoying the open air outside the pub - and that is difficult these days as whilst smokers are thin on the ground they seem to have an air pollution rota thing going on :(

Motor vehicles do too but everyone of us depend on them just to live.
None of us are free from the "guilt" of polluting each other.

I enjoy a drink. I don't throw cans, glasses or bottles on the floor for other people to set in/over or clear up. I don't urinate over people near me to get rid of the waste products produced, but if I did apart from needing to clean themselves and their clothing bystanders' health would not be put at risk. I don't drink and drive.

Yet many a smoker does the equivalent of all of these with their habit.

Second hand smoke badly affects my Asthma, my wife suffers with Bronciectasis and is also affected by second hand smoke. Frankly if they banned all smoking today it's too late for us we both grew up in a world where cigarettes were the norm' and both my Parents, smokers for all their lives died from smoking related diseases, my Father long before 'his time'. Neither of us have ever smoked. Who knows we both may have escaped the problems we have if we had not spent much of our lives inhaling other peoples smoke.

Oh no we don't r2. I very rarely disagree with anything you say, but I do on this one. It's a falacy. I'm retired now, but I've lived a full professional life and raised two daughters who've been through University, got their degrees and are now in decent jobs. I'm not saying this to be admired - it's just everyday life for those of us with a brain - but I've never had a car, or a driving license.

All I've done is to decide to do without the damned things.

Anyone can do it. Those who don't want to will make their own choice and live by it, but never, ever elevate the motor car to the level of necessity.
