Quando Freehub - same fixing to hub as Shimano ?

Post by javatime »

Does anyone have experience of Quando freehubs ?

I have replaced freehubs on several shimano rear hub bodies and am familiar with the internal allen key and hollow fixing bolt.

Before I get into a quando freehub can anyone confirm that the same fxing method is used.

Also is the quando freehub compatible with a shimano rear hub - the external cassette splines are !

Do your homework first if you can. Most Shimano freehubs until recently were 10mm allen bolt. The Taiwan copies tend to be 8mm. New Shimano as on the current XT model are larger to accomodate the oversize aluminium axle but I haven't played with one so I don't know the size.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!

This interests me as i have quando freehubs on my Dawes tandem. A quick search came up with this http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic ... is-freehub
It indicates that the freehub is removed from the non - drive side ie nothing like the shimano arrangement, and to make matters worse there appears to be 2 designs one unscrews clockwise and the other anticlockwise.
Let me know how you get on :?

Just check it even comes off the hub. I have a nice hub, picked up in the bargain bin of a shop. The freehub just isn't coming off. Where there is a 10mm allen head bolt on a Shimano hub there is a multi splined affair. I suspect that its pressed on actually. Either way its staying there.

Might be worth trying flooding it with something like WD40 or paraffin to flush the cr@p out, then working some oil into it.....sometimes gets them going again, depending whats wrong, of course. But then the hub bearings will need re-greasing, and you have to check that it always picks up the drive straight away before using it in traffic, or anywhere else you don't want sudden loss of drive.

Many thanks for the help esp. Barrenfluffit

Doesn't look like there is a definitive any before I go and get stuck in, but now I know the possibilities.

Thanks for the tip Colin, but it works perfectly with no slip.

I wanted to do the swap because the Quando is sized for 9 speed, wheras my current Shimano rear hub is 7 speed, and I want to upgrade it.

Found this from 2011, enquiring if anyone may be able to update the advice on this.

I have Quando hubs on my 2004 Dawes Audax, feels as though freehub might need regreasing, although working ok. The bike has prbably covered about 10000 miles since I bought it NOS in 2007.

The freehub does not remove like a Shimano one!

Should it be removed by undoing something on no drive side?

When it is removed, should the freehub stay in one piece and then be dismantled, OR will it fall to bits with the ball bearings pinging all over the place?

Thanks for your help, any updates welcome.

OR should I make my way to Harrogate and test ride a nice new titanium bike from SPA Cycles? :D

Ok i have stripped the "quando" hub and can find nothing amiss with the bearings, cones etc, surprised to find 9 x 1/4" balls on the LHS and 10 slightly smaller on the RHS. Next job to open up the freehub but the seal is very tight - any tips for getting it out without damaging it. It appears to be plastic with a thin rubber seal projecting from it. Tried levering carefully with a screwdriver but it didn't budge and i dont want to damage it. The freehub has a distinct once a revolution tick to it. :(
I assume the freehub opens up by unscrewing the cone clockwise when i get that far. The freehub is attached by a pretty big hollow bolt, bigger than a 7/16" allen key which was the biggest i had so hopefully i wont need to remove it.

The axle and qr from this hub has gone in the redished Shimano hubbed wheel so the tandem is back on the road and i can play with the quando one at my leisure
Later I opened up the freehub as it had an annoying tick to it. I found it was short of 1 ball on one of the races. From memory it had 25 on one race and 24 or 26 on the other. Putting the extra ball in and removing a shim sorted it.
I did this in situ on the wheel so never removed the freehub.

This was on a Dawes Discovery tandem which had a rear Quando freehub with a longer axle and an extra 10mm locknut to make it fit the 145 oln of the tandem. I never needed to remove the freehub from the hub.

Opening it up was straightforward as I placed the wheel over a washing up bowl to catch the balls. As I carefully removed the sprocket carrier part the balls all stayed in place phew. Pawls were pretty robust and no flying springs either. :D
Here's an update that I posted at the time.
I had a Quando freehub on the tandem. It had an annoying once a revolution tick. When I stripped it I found 24 balls on one race and 25 on the other. I rebuilt it with 25 balls on each race and it's now quiet.
BTW 7/16" suggests you need at least a 12mm Allen key to remove it.
Possibly bigger. But it's straightforward to dismantle in situ.

I've done over 40k miles on this hub on a tandem. :D
