waterproof/breathable cycle jacket?

Post by Miguel Evans »

Looking to buy a waterproof, breathable jacket. Needs to be short and fitting for winter club outings, preferably luminescent. I have been looking at the Gore stuff, but there appears to be limited availability and no yellow ones about. Anyone got any experience of the Endura stuff on sale from Spa cycles?
Thanks
Miguel.

Have you looked at Altura's offerings? I bought one earlier in the year and I'm quite pleased with it.

I've got the Endura Venturi 2 jacket (not from Spa though). Cut etc is fine, lots of pit zips etc, but it's an expensive jacket spoiled by the following points which means I wouldn't really recommend it.
(i) the chest pocket is only taped along the bottom. After a very short time and practically no use the tape fails so you haven't got a pocket. I think you can glue it back somehow but you shouldn't have to. I sent one jacket back but this happened to the replacement too. Think it's bad design rather than ham-fisted me.
(ii) the optional hood looks a bit geeky but once you've played with and got it adjusted tight it works really well. The minor problem is when you have it zipped on to the jacket but not on your head it tends to half unzip itself easily which is a pain.
(iii) it's the most breathable material since the string vest etc etc but it's a hot jacket to wear. This is great in the depths of winter of course, but is slightly problem for sweaty bettys such as myself in warmer months. I'd rather have a cold jacket and layer up underneath.

Normally I'm a big Endura fan - have bought loads of their stuff over the years and always look to them first, but this one isn't the jacket for me.

Thanks for the advice. Bike radar has some bad reviews of the Altura - zips going pop etc. I also want to use the jacket for spirited club rides - hence the interest in the Endura breathable. I have also had some great Endura stuff over the years, so was tempted until your review.
So looks like its back to Gore, and hope that they make the yellow ones available again. Me and the kids did the school run in the deluge today. I got soaked (which is ok as my skin is waterproof). They stayed bone dry (at least down to their waists) thanks to their Mountain Warehouse "waterproof, breathable" jackets that only cost me about £20 each. I notice the the adult ones are only about £40, so I might have a look at their technical spec to see if they are indeed "waterproof/breathable". Funny really - kids thought it was great getting soaked (could have saved my money).

A "pwy yw shane?". Na, nid fy hen siaced i. Breuddwyd efallai?

If you can find the Endura Venturi 1 (ie the eVent one) it is a very good jacket, and should be reduced in price due to the new version 2 of the jacket. Should be under £100.

The eVent material is highly breathable, and very waterproof and windproof. Had mine for over 3 years. It's done a LEJOG and numerous other tours in the UK and is currently getting me across a slightly cold western China.

Beyond that if you want the latest and best, a Goretex Pro Shell. I've not looked for any but when I get back I'll probably be checking suggestions on this thread.

I've had a two Mountain Warehouse cycle jackets, and they've been very good, only needing to replace them as they become filthy with road grime that won't wash out.
They also have the advantage of a hood (why don't more cycle jackets have a hood?) which is ideal for keeping my ears and shiney head out of the draught during the winter :D

I was in JD Cyles Ilkley only a couple of weeks back and I noticed they had Men's yellow Gore Paclite jackets in stock.
If I didn't already have several jackets I would have bought one.
