It all sounds like to much hassle, climbing around on a big rock in the middle of the sea - can't they just release them in front of a load of toffs in a field for them to shoot for fun - like they do pheasants ?

It appears that these birds are killed just as humanely as most of the other animals that people (Muslim or otherwise  ) eat.

I think the only species that consider "humane" to be a good thing are humans but not quite all of us.

Western Civilisation!

Time for a Godwin moment.

i reckon killing animals for food is needless, but i'm in the minority
could you let me have a list of holiday destinations where this doesn't happen? preferably of countries that don't require the wasteful consumption of fuel in aircraft to visit

One place that came to mind is the Findhorn Community.

http://www.findhorn.org/visit/b-and-b/

Unfortunately the nationwide ban on holidaying in Scotland rules it out. :-(
No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?

1/ The birds are clubbed to death, and it is thought that because of the size and shape of the skulls of gannets they do in large part have what you would term 'non-humane' deaths.

2/ And these are exclusively gannet chicks. I find the killing of large numbers of young animals like this disturbing.
I should coco.

looks delightful. 8) didn't see much in the way of what ales and beers that may be available on a holiday there, but happily they've provided a list of airplane companies that might deliver me to their sustainable village :P

I am not disagreeing with you.

I just cant see how that is any worse than what happens in a chicken factory and the chickens, I think, will be much younger than the gannets.

In absolute terms, a similar age. Free range chickens are slaughtered a little older, factory fed a little younger. (source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/ ... .features8.) Though proportionate to their lifecycles, gannets are much longer-lived and slower to mature, so are 'younger' when killed.

But agreed, there doesn't seem to be any objection that doesn't apply to captive livestock. I don't think any non-vegan criticising this practice has a leg, or drumstick, to stand on.

But the same can be said of fishing, a popular pastime everywhere. Rip their mouths with a hook, then bash them with a club. Or worse - use a gaff. :(

Read this taken from here:

"The men catch 2000 "guga" or gannet chicks - the gannet chicks that are almost fully grown. They return two weeks later with the 2000guga - which they have caught, killed, pickled and salted.
There is a lot of skill and the art of hunting and bring back the guga is a real art - traditions that have been passed on through the generations for centuries,

Catch Pole and Rocks Used to Catch and Kill the Birds
The gugas are killed using a long pole with a spring loaded jaw on top. The guga is snatched from its nest and passed straight on to another man who strikes it dead with a single blow from a rock

Head Removed - The whole Process is Pain free and Quick
The bird is then passed to another gentleman - who will remove the birds head taking care to leave its long neck. The entire process is actually made as quick and painless as possible.

The birds are killed in this way - and the whole process is dealt with in half an hour."

You can discuss all you want the method of killing, those that are not inclined to eat meat will find any method Barbaric. Those that eat meat will fall into 2 camps those that don't actually think about the meat as such, hence dead cow is called beef, And those that don't care, there are very few people that hunt and kill their own food these days. If this is sustainable method of hunting What is the problem? It’s not done for sport; it’s probably more human than the Chicken factories. I am always surprised by people who eat meat but are aghast when it’s something that’s not normally on their own plate. Its ok to eat pigs cows or sheep, but not horse. Dog is another one we as westerner s turn our noses up at but why. I really don't see the difference between Cormorant and any other type of Game. And as for not visiting a country because it eats a particular animal that is just absurd
