Witcomb Frame Numbers
Just been given a Witcomb frame. Serial number appears to be 613. Is there any way of checking its date etc? Previous strand seems to peter out and Witcombs are no more! Thanks
Re: Witcomb Frame Numbers
Hi,
On Witcomb frames, the last two digits are the year, see attached link:

520166 would be 1966, I own 431064 (1964). Your frame number would appear to be incomplete?
Edit: Or maybe a very early frame?

Re: Witcomb Frame Numbers
That is useful, thank you. I think what it is, is a frame whose origins are not too clear. The decals are Witcomb but have almost disappeared with time. The frame number may be incomplete as suggested. It does need a good clean after languishing in a rubbish pile for a long time. I am assuming frame number will be as trad on the bb area. One question:- do all Witcombs have scrolled lugs or were some simple braze/welded joints which were rendered smooth? Personally, I am not building any hopes. It was a freebie so it could be just a decent winter project and road bike.

Witcomb might of stuck their decals on after a respray, a lot of places do that.
Re: Witcomb Frame Numbers
Previous posts on Witcomb frame numbers are correct. Witcomb usually put their frame numbers on the bottom bracket shell. 613 would suggest that the frame number is a) either incomplete or b) it is a number put on the frame by a refinisher in the past. I have found frames with this in the past. If the paint on your frame is poor, take a stainless steel brush to the bottom bracket shell to find the frame number.
